Ahlul Bidah- They Speak in affairs of the religion without Knowledge

Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah ( rahimahullah ) said:

When it is the case that the (true) followers of the Prophets are people of knowledge and justice, then the speech of the people of Islaam and the Sunnah about the disbelievers and people of bidah is (carried out) with knowledge and justice and not with conjecture and the soul’s desire. And due to this, the Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi wasallam) said: Judges are of three types, one of whom will go to Paradise and two to Hell. A man who knows the truth and judges with it will enter paradise; a man who knows the truth but judges with the opposite of it will enter the fire, and a man who judges for the people based on ignorance will enter the fire.’’ [Reported by Imaam Abu Dawud and others]

And when it is the case that the one who judges between the people in (affairs) of wealth, blood (i.e. murder cases, injury etc.) and honour will enter the hell fire if he is not a just scholar, then what about the one who passes judgements without knowledge-such being the case with ahlul bidah-on religions, the Usool of Imaan, affairs of knowledge related to Allaah, His Names, Attributes and Actions, and the lofty affairs of knowledge.’’

The Messengers Are The Most Judicious Amongst The Creation, So Whoever Is Closest to Them by Following Their Way Will Receive a Greater Share of This Judiciouness

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) stated:

The Messengers (of Allaah) are the most judicious amongst the creation without exception and after them their followers are the most judicious group. The people of the scriptures and the great legislated laws are the most judicious amongst them (i.e. amongst the followers of the Messengers) and the Muslims are the most judicious amongst them (i.e. the followers of the scriptures and great legislated laws). The Sahaabah are the most judicious amongst the Muslims and then those who followed them exactly in faith. Ahlus Sunnah Wal Hadeeth (i.e. the people who follow the authentic Sunnah, the authentic ahaadeeth and understanding of the comapnions in creed, methodology, dealings etc) are the most judicious amongst the Muslim Ummah without exception after them (i.e. after the Sahaabah, the Taabi’een and the At’baa At’taabi’een).

The clear evidence showing that (the Messengers are the most judicious amongst the entire creation) is that the beneficial knowledge they have brought- the righteous actions, beneficial affairs of true well-being in this worldly life and the afterlife- has not emanated (from others), or something even close it. There is nothing- from any perspective- that emanated from other judicious (personalities) that can be compared to (what the Messengers brought with regards to beneficial knowledge, righteous action and the beneficial affairs of true well-being in this worldly life and the afterlife).

Whoever ponders upon their personal life stories in specific and in general- their patience and perseverance; their abstinence from the lawful but unnecessary worldly things; their fervent desire for Allaah and the reward He has kept in the afterlife; their purified manners and being characterized with the most pleasant of them; and the fact that they are the most truthful amongst the creation; (possessors) of the most righteous hearts; (possessors) of the most purified souls; trustees of the greatest trust; the noblest of those whom a person can accompany; the purest in their innermost conscience; the purest with regards to their private affairs- will not doubt the fact that they are the most judicious amongst Allaah’s creation without exception. There is no doubt that whoever is closer to them (i.e. follows them properly), then his (or her) share of judiciousness will be more than (that of others). They (i.e. Upright scholars and their Students) clarify the rulings of the Islamic religion for the people in all spheres of life that requires clarification

Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami (rahimahullaah)

Indeed, the call to Islaam comprises of various fields and has different procedures; and among its procedures is the establishment of assemblies and summits in which men of sound Islamic views and the Jurists of the Muslims meet in order to solve the problems of the era. They refute the doubts that arise about Islaam and the (sound) creed of the Muslims. They clarify the rulings of the Islamic religion for the people in all spheres of life that requires clarification-and how numerous are those in need of clarification-so that the people can be upon clarity in their religious and worldly affairs. This is (carried out) under the auspices of the Book (i.e. the Qur’aan) and (authentic) Sunnah, so that people are removed from darkness and (entered) into light. And there is no (other) path of exit from the darkness of ignorance and Pre-Islamic (practices and beliefs) except by way of the understanding in the Book and the Sunnah. This is the job of the Messengers ( عليهم الصلاة والسلام), beginning with the first of them Nuh ( عليه الصلاة والسلام) to the last of them-their leader, Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم). Allaah (The Most High) addressed His noble Messenger Muhammad ( صلى الله عليه وسلم), whilst clarifying what the Job of His Messenger and that of his followers is:

”O Prophet (Muhammad)! Verily, We have sent you as witness, and a bearer of glad tidings, and a warner; And as one who invites to Allah [Islamic Monotheism, i.e. to worship none but Allah (Alone)] by His Leave, and as a lamp spreading light (through your instructions from the Qur’an and the Sunnah the legal ways of the Prophet). And announce to the believers (in the Oneness of Allah and in His Messenger Muhammad) the glad tidings, that they will have from Allah a Great Bounty.” [33:45-47]

In these three verses (i.e. Surah Al-Ahzaab), there is a clarification of the job of the Noble Messenger Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم )  and that of his followers. And that is to call to Allaah [Islamic Monotheism] by the Permission and command of Allaah, upon clear sightedness and sure knowledge. Allaah said:

Say (O Muhammad): “This is my way; I invite unto Allah (i.e. to the Oneness of Allah – Islamic Monotheism) with sure knowledge, I and whosoever follows me (also must invite others to Allah i.e. to the Oneness of Allah – Islamic Monotheism) with sure knowledge’’ [12:108]

Allaah obligated His Prophet with this generalised call and not specified to his people (i.e. the Arabs), which was the case with the Messengers before him (i.e. the call of the other Prophets was limited to their people); rather the Prophet’s Message is to call all the people. Allaah (The Most High) said: [وَمَآ أَرۡسَلۡنَـٰكَ إِلَّا ڪَآفَّةً۬ لِّلنَّاسِ] ”And We have not sent you (O Muhammad), except to all mankind.” [34:28]

This is an obligation (placed) upon the Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم ) and then upon his followers, so that they may be witnesses against all the people.

Had it not been the Tawfeeq of Allaah upon you, your souls would not have yielded to Imaan

Allaah (The Most High) said:

And know that, among you there is the Messenger of Allah. If he were to obey you (i.e. follow your opinions and desires) in much of the matter, you would surely be in trouble, but Allah has endeared the Faith to you and has beautified it in your hearts, and has made disbelief, wickedness and disobedience (to Allah and His Messenger) hateful to you. These! They are the rightly guided ones, (This is) a Grace from Allah and His Favour. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise. [Soorah al-Hujuraat: Ayah 7-8]

Your love for Imaan, desire for it and its beautification in your hearts is not from yourselves; rather it is Allaah who placed it in your hearts. He is the one who made it preferable and pleasing to you; therefore do not put yourself before My [i.e. I (Allaah)] Messenger-neither speak until he speaks nor act until he commands you. The one (i.e. Allaah) who made you love Imaan is the most knowledgeable concerning what is of benefit for His slaves than yourselves.  And had it not been the Tawfeeq of Allaah upon you, your souls would not have yielded to Imaan. Imaan would not have been (acquired) through your consultation and bestowed from yourselves, nor would you have given it precedence because your souls are unable and weak to (do that), and cannot reach it…. Few Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee for the Sensible Person to Contemplate Upon Regarding Celebrating Milaadun Nabiy

The Shaikh (may Allaah preserve him) stated:

*If you do (or revive) a deed (i.e. a deed that is established in the Islamic legislation by way of proof) which was forgotten (or abandoned) by the people, then indeed you have started (or restarted) a good Sunnah for them.

*As for innovating something (i.e. religious beliefs and practices) in the religion which are not to be found in it, then this is bidah about which the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said: ‘’Whoever innovates in this affair of ours that which is not from it will have it rejected.’’

Allaah (The Most High) said:

[أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَاء شَرَعُوا لَهُم مِّنَ الدِّينِ مَا لَمْ يَأْذَن بِهِ اللَّهُ -Or have they partners with Allah (false gods), who have instituted for them a religion which Allah has not allowed] [42:21]

*If this (Mawlid) was something good, the Messenger of Allaah (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) and the Sahaabah would have preceeded us to it.

Indeed, the companions knew the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) and they loved him more than us, but many of us (i.e. those who celebrate Mawlid) unfortunately do not know him (i.e. his authentic Sunnah and his ways) except by way of this (Mawlid). As for the Sahaabah, they (radiyallaahu-anhum), knew his every moment; they spent their wealth to aid Allaah’s (The Mighty and Majestic) religion and to raise Allaah’s Word (i.e. Laa ilaaha ilal-laah). They demonstrated their love for the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) through their belief in him, followed him, sacrificed their lives and their wealth to aid his religion.

*As for these ones (i.e. those heads of misguidance who call the people to celebrate the Mawlid), they say that they love the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) and they initiate these Mawlids because it includes devouring the wealth of the people by way of falsehood, and they commit shirk, fictitious deeds and misguidance in these Mawlids (i.e. the practices of the extreme soofiyyah). Is this the religion of Allaah? Is the one who initiated this to be praised?

*Those who first initiated this Mawlid were the Baatiniyyoon-the enemies of Allaah and His Messenger, and enemies of the religion of Islaam. They brought this filthy innovation, which is now defended by a people who claim that they are from Ahlus Sunnah, whilst unfortunately they are from the people of misguidance.  [Abridged and slightly paraphrased…see

Who Is This Dangerous Category of People Mentioned by Shaikh Rabee?!

Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadi (may Allaah preserve him) said:

(You) find the likes of this dishonesty today; there is that one who approaches two disputing parties-one group upon truth and the other upon falsehood, so he misguides all of them and does not give greater weight to the truth. He manifests a new doctrine which he considers to be the balance path, whilst it is falsehood and sophistry in and of itself. This category of people is a dangerous trend and their foundation is lying and deception.

‘One of The Ways through Which the Qussaas (story tellers) Seek to Corrupt The People’-by Imaam Ibnul Jawzi

Imaam Ibnul Jawzi (rahimahullaah) stated:

When it is the case that addressing the (people) through exhortations is mostly (directed at) the common people, the ignorant story tellers found a way of reaching their goals. Then their bidah did not cease until the affair reached alarming proportions. So they brought about evil (affairs with regards to their) deeds, statements and goals.

Why Hate and Falsely Blame The Trustworthy Scholars and Students After They Fulfil This Great Responsibility!

Imaam Muslim (rahimahullaah) said:

know-may may Allaah (The Mot High) grant you success-that it is obligatory upon everyone (i.e. the scholars who criticise or commend narrators of hadeeth) to know the distinction between the authentic chains of transmission and the faulty ones, and the (trustworthiness, precision etc) of the narrators of (the authentic chains) as opposed to those who have been charged (with weakness, forgetfulness, fabrication etc in their narrations), so that nothing is transmitted from these narrations except that which whose narrator is sound and blameless in his narrations, and to avoid that which is from those who have been charged with (weakness, forgetfulness, fabrication etc) and the obstinate ones amongst Ahlul Bidah. [Muqaddimah Saheeh Muslim: page 61]

Reminder: A Beautiful Observation by Imaam Ibnul Qayyim Regarding the Reason behind the Misguidance of Some of Those Who Came After the Sahaabah

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said:

As for those who came after the Sahaabah (i.e. us), among them is that one who was brought up in Islaam but knows not what is in opposition to it. Therefore, some of the details of the path of the believers and that of the criminals became confusing to him, for indeed confusion occurs due to the weakness of one’s knowledge regarding either paths or one of them, as Umar Ibnul Khattaab (radiyallaahu-anhu) said:

”The ties of Islaam will be demolished one after the other when a people brought up in Islaam know not what Jaahiliyyah (Pre-Islamic Ignorance) is.”

This (statement indicates) Umar’s excellent knowledge.  And if you do not know what pre-Islamic ignorance and its rulings are, then it is all that is in opposition to what the Messenger came with-all (affairs) that are in opposition to the Messenger is tantamount to ignorance.

And there is that one who is neither acquainted with the path of the criminals nor has it been made clear to him, or he has doubts and thus thinks that some of their ways are from the ways of the believers. This has occurred in this Ummah in many affairs pertaining to Aqeedah, Knowledge and Action from the path of the criminals, the disbelievers and the enemies of the Messengers, (which) was brought into the path of the believers by the one who does not know the (detailed distinction between) the path of believers and the path of the criminals, so he calls to (this path of the criminals); excommunicates the one who opposes him and declares lawful that which Allaah and His Messenger made unlawful, just as what has occurred with many of the people of bidah, such as the Jahmiyyah, the Qadariyyah, the Khawaarij, the Rawaafid and their likes, among those who initiated an innovation, called to it and excommunicated those who opposed it.

Do Not Scrutinize The Beliefs and Mistakes of the People!

Shaikh Muhammad Baazmool (may Allaah preserve him) said:

This statement is reiterated by some people when warning reaches them from one of the scholars or a student of knowledge against innovated statements (or views) that have occurred from some of the people, or when informed about mistakes committed in knowledge and he is warned about it; so you find that his face becomes red, his (behaviour) changes and he says, ‘’Do not scrutinize the beliefs of the people and do not search for their mistakes.’’ The reality is that this statement is truth by way of which falsehood is sought in this particular instance.

Firstly: The right place to (use this statement) is where one seeks after secrets and hidden affairs, which have neither manifested nor are there any factual evidences indicating towards that. The place (where this statement cannot be used) is  where innovation arises from one of (the people) or when one of them calls to falsehood, since there is a difference between that which is manifested and that which is either concealed, hidden and unknown, or that there is no indication towards that.

Secondly: This statement of theirs will lead to the abandonment of warning against mistakes and censure against innovation and falsehood.  And the meaning of this is that the common people will be beguiled, rather even some of the students of knowledge will become inattentive to this situation.

Thirdly: Was the speech of the Salaf with regards to warning against innovation and the people of falsehood not (carried out) from the angle of warning against false beliefs, innovations and affairs in opposition to the Sunnah?  So how can it be said, ‘do not scrutinize the beliefs and mistakes of the people’ to a person who either warns against an innovation manifested by an individual or points out a mistake committed by an individual?

Fourthly: Scrutinizing the beliefs of the people by way of interrogation and trial as the Khaleefah Mamoon did with regards to the belief that the (Qur’aan is created), then this is an innovation that is warned against.  (However) to make a clarification and (issue) warning against an innovation that some people call to, unveiling the falsehood of the callers to falsehood and warning against them, this is not from that (type of scrutiny that is warned against).

Fifthly: Those (people) who blame the one who unveils the (affairs) of the people of falsehood and issues warning against them, then it is either they disapprove innovations or do not!  If they disapprove innovation, point out mistakes and falsehood, and warn against them, then indeed they have pursued the right course by the Will of Allaah (The Most High). However, why do they disapprove of those who take their place in renouncing innovation?! If they do not warn the people against falsehood, then this (i.e. behaviour or stance of theirs) is not from the methodology of the Salaf and it suffices as a rebuke against them.

Sixthly: It has been reported in Durar As-Saniyyah (1/33) that the Imaam, the Mujaddid, Muhammad Bin Abdul Wahhaab (rahimahullaah) said: I hold that the people of innovation are to be boycotted and their affair is to be made known until they repent.  I pass judgement against them based on what is apparent and I leave their secrets (or hidden) affairs to Allaah.  And I believe that every newly invented matter in the Religion is an innovation.

This [statement of Imaam Muhammad Bin Abdul Wahhaab (rahimahullaah)] is the statement of a Salafiy Athariy [i.e. a true follower of the Salaf and the authentic narrations] that emanates from the statement of Umar Ibnul Khattaab (radiyallaahu-anhu) when he said:

‘People were (sometimes) judged by the revealing of a Divine Inspiration during the lifetime of Allah’s Apostle but now there is no longer any more (new revelation). Now we judge you by the deeds you practice publicly, so we will trust and favour the one who does good deeds in front of us, and we will not call him to account about what he is really doing in secret, for Allah will judge him for that; but we will not trust or believe the one who presents to us with an evil deed even if he claims that his intentions were good.’ [Saheeh Bukhaari; Vol 3; Hadith Number:2641]

So examine the statement of Imaam Muhammad Bin Abdul Wahhaab (rahimahullaah) when he said: ‘I judge (ahlul bidah) based upon what is apparent’‘ and examine the statement of Umar Ibnul Khattaab (radiyallaahu-anhu) when he said, ‘but we will not trust or believe the one who presents to us with an evil deed even if he claims that his intentions were good.’  Then examine the (affair) of that person who disapproves of one who warns against ahlul bidah and exposes their falsehood- claiming that (this warning against ahlul bidah) is tantamount to scrutinizing the Aqeedah of the people.  Is this (statement of his) correct? Glorified and Exalted You are, O My Lord!  Is not judgement passed against the people except through what is apparent?! This principle affirmed by Al Faarooq, Umar Ibnul Khattaab (radiyallaah-anhu) is employed in warning against a person of innovation when he manifests his innovation. [1]

The Stance of Imaam Ahmad towards Daawood Ibn Ali Al- Asbahaanee

Daawood Ibn Ali Al-Asbahaanee came to Saaleh Ibn Imaam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal with whom he used to have a good relationship.  So he (Daawood) spoke to Saaleh Ibn Imaam Ahmad to make it easy for him to meet his father.

So Saaleh approached Imaam Ahmad (i.e. his father) and said; A man asked me to bring him to you.

Imaam Ahmad: What is his name?

Saaleh: Daawood.

Imaam Ahmad: Where is he from?

Saaleh: He is from the people of Asbahaan.

Imaam Ahmad: Has he being (involved) in fabricating anything?

At this point: Saaleh refrained from describing Daawood to his father (Imaam Ahmad).  So he (Imaam Ahmad) did not stop enquiring about Daawood until he realized who he was.  Then he said: Muhammad Bin Yahyaa An-Naysabooree wrote to me about this (Daawood) saying that he (Daawood) claims that the Qur’aan is something that was brought into existence (i.e. created), so do not bring him near me.

Saaleh: O my father! he (Daawood) has negated and renounced this (statement).

Imaam Ahmad: Muhammad Bin Yahyaa is more trustworthy than him.  I do not give you permission to bring him to me.

O my brother! Contemplate upon the stance of Imaam Ahmad.  Is this the Imaam? He is the Imaam of Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaa’ah in his adherence to the Sunnah of the Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) and in following the narrations of the Sahaabah; so did he use to scrutinize the beliefs of the people and seek after their mistakes?!  Examine his statement and that of Umar Ibnul Khattaab mentioned earlier, ‘but we will not trust or believe the one who presents to us with an evil deed even if he claims that his intentions were good.’

Therefore, the statement of Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhaab (rahimahullaah) is certified by the statement of the Rightly Guided Khaleefah Umar Ibnul Khattaab (radiyallaahu-anhu) and that of Imaam Ahmad Bin Hanbal (rahimahullaah). [2]
