Let’s Learn From the Ruin of the Evil Forefathers and Not Follow Their Path

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah, The Most High, said:

Many similar mishaps [troubles, problems] of life were faced by nations that have passed away before you, so travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who disbelieved]. [Surah Aal Imran. 137]

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Indeed, there were nations like yourselves before you, so look to their evil end. You have to know that the reason behind their evil end was due to their disbelief in the revelations of Allaah and disbelief in Allaah’s Messengers. They were the forefathers and you are the descendants. The main affair that connects you to each other is your disbelief and the ruling on that disbelief is destruction. [I’laam Al-Muwaqqi-een: 1/181]

Imam Muhammad Bin Salih Al-Uthaymeen, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said:

If it is said, “What is the benefit in narrating to us the stories of the destroyed nations despite the fact that this Ummah will not be completely destroyed in a manner similar to the destruction of the previous nations before it?”

The Answer: Indeed, this has two benefits: The first benefit is a clarification of Allah’s blessings upon us that the occurrence of a complete destruction is removed from us, and that were it not for Allah’s Benevolence we would have been deserving of it. Second, the likeness of the punishment they received may occur in the hereafter for the one who did what they did, if punishment was not received in the worldly life. And this may be understood from the statement of Allah: “Such is the Seizure of your Lord when He seizes the population of towns while they are doing wrong. Verily, His Seizure is painful and severe. Indeed in that (there) is a sure lesson for those who fear the torment of the Hereafter.” So what is apparent from this Aayah is that what is similar to the punishment they received will happen in the Hereafter, and Allah knows best. The Nations of The Past Had Their Share of Punishment In This Life Due to Sin and Transgression

Allah said:

Say: “O people of the Scripture! Do you criticize us for no other reason than that we believe in Allah, and in (the revelation) which has been sent down to us and in that which has been sent down before (us), and that most of you are Fasiqun [rebellious and disobedient (to Allah)]?” Say (O Muhammad to the people of the Scripture): “Shall I inform you of something worse than that, regarding the recompense from Allah: those (Jews) who incurred the Curse of Allah and His Wrath, those of whom (some) He transformed into monkeys and swines, those who worshipped Taghut (false deities); such are worse in rank (on the Day of Resurrection in the Hell-fire), and far more astray from the Right Path (in the life of this world).” [Al-Maa’idah. 59-60]

Allah said:

And indeed you knew those amongst you who transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath (i.e. Saturday). We said to them: “Be you monkeys, despised and rejected.” So We made this punishment an example to their own and to succeeding generations and a lesson to those who are Al-Muttaqun (the pious). [Surah Al-Baqarah. 65-66]

Allah said:

And ask them (O Muhammad ) about the town that was by the sea, when they transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath (i.e. Saturday): when their fish came to them openly on the Sabbath day, and did not come to them on the day they had no Sabbath. Thus We made a trial of them for they used to rebel. And when a community among them said: “Why do you preach to a people whom Allah is about to destroy or to punish with a severe torment?” (The preachers) said: “In order to be free from guilt before your Lord (Allah), and perhaps they may fear Allah.” So when they forgot the reminders that had been given to them, We rescued those who forbade evil, but We seized those who did wrong with a severe torment because they used to rebel (disobey Allah). So when they exceeded the limits of what they were prohibited, We said to them: “Be you monkeys, despised and rejected.” (It is a severe warning to the mankind that they should not disobey what Allah commands them to do, and be far away from what He prohibits them). [Surah Al-A’raaf. Aayaat 163-166]

Narrated Abu ‘Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash’ari, may Allah be pleased with him, that he heard the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, saying:

From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk (i.e. for men), the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. And there will be some people who will stay near the side of a mountain and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, ‘Return to us tomorrow.’ Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and He will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection”. [Saheeh al-Bukhaari 5590]

Abdullah Ibn Mas’ood [may Allaah be pleased with him] reported that the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] said, “Just before the Hour (i.e. Judgement day) comes there will be transformations (i.e. people turned into animals due to sin), the earth collapsing, and Qadhf (i.e. pelted with stones as a means of punishment – maybe it refers to landslides)”. [Sunan Ibn Maajah 4059]

Ibn ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him and his father, said: I heard Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, saying:

“In this Ummah there will be collapse of the earth, or a transformation, or stones shall rain upon the people (who deny) Al-Qadr.'” [Sunan Tirmidhee 2152]

Imran Bin Husain, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

“In this Ummah there shall be collapsing of the earth, transformation and Qadhf.” A man among the Muslims said, “O Allaah’s Messenger! When is that?” He said: “When singing slave-girls, music, and drinking intoxicants spread.” [Sunan Tirmidhee 2212]

Ibn Mas’ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said that Umm Habeebah, may Allah be pleased with her, said, “O Allah! Enable me to derive benefit from my husband, Allah’s Messenger, and from my father Abu Sufyan, and from my brother Mu’awiyah”. Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to her, “Verily, you have asked Allah about the durations of life already set, and the steps which you would take, and the sustenance the share of which is fixed. Nothing would take place earlier than its due time, and nothing would be deferred beyond that when it is due. So, if you were to ask Allah about your safety from the torment of Hell-Fire and from the torment of the grave, it would have been better for you”. A person said, “O Allah’s Messenger! Are the apes and swine from that which were transformed?” So, the Prophet said, “Verily, Allah [The Exalted and Glorious] did not destroy a people or did not torment a people, and let their race carry on. Apes and swine existed even before that (i.e. when those who denied truth were punished and transformed into animals). [Sahih Muslim 2663]

Allah Teaches Us Soul-Shaking Lessons Within The Short Periods of Our Lifespans

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah, The Most High, said:

By (the phenomenon of) time (which Allah manifests through His creation of night and day and in which the servants perform their deeds). Indeed, (all of) mankind is in loss. Except those who believe (in Allāh, His Angels, Books, Prophets, the Last Day and the Divine Decree) and work righteous deeds (which are sincere and correct) and mutually advise each other (in calling to and abiding by) the truth and mutually advise each other with patience (in facing the inevitable harms brought by calling to the truth). [1]

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Allah made an oath by “(the phenomenon of) time” because it is the period in which moral lessons and signs occur, and because the alternation of night and day under the Decree of the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing are organised to serve the welfare of the universe based on the most perfect order and organisation – alternating with one another, sometimes not much difference between them and at other times one takes from the hours of the other, the difference between the light, the darkness, the heat, and the cold, and the different periods divided into generations, years, months, days, hours and what is lesser than that! These are all signs (creations) of the Lord, The Most High- a Burhaan [proof that clarifies and distinguishes between truth and falsehood in everything] and proofs regarding Allah’s All-Encompassing Perfect Ability and Wisdom, free is Allah from all imperfections, faults, deficiencies, shortcomings.

Allah made an oath by “(the phenomenon of) time” within which human beings perform deeds for which one either receives punishment or a good recompense. He gave a notification about (the phenomenon of) time, which is the Mab’da [i.e. the beginning] and notified the performers of deeds about the Ma’ad [the return to the Hereafter], and that just as He was not unable to initiate the beginning, likewise He is not unable to establish the Hereafter; and that His Wisdom, which necessitated the creation of (the phenomenon of) time, the performers of deeds and their deeds, and their categorisation into good and bad deeds, (i.e. deeds chosen by the person after being given free will and shown guidance through the Messengers) establishes the fact that the people are not equal, and it cannot be that the good doer will not receive a good recompense and that the evil doer will not be recompensed for his evil, and it cannot be that there will not be two groups- the gainers and the losers; but rather the human being, in essence, is a loser, except the one whom Allah shows mercy, guides, blesses with Iman, the ability to perform righteous deeds and command others. Besides this person is the one who is reduced to the lowest of the low. [2]

Upright Reformers Every Hundred Years

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Allah will raise for this Ummah at the end of every hundred years the one who will revive its religion for it. [1]

“Allah will raise for this Ummah”– Meaning, the Ummah Al-Ijaabah (the Muslims).

“At the end of every hundred years”– Meaning, at the end of every hundred years when there is little knowledge of the Shariah and the authentic Prophetic Sunnah, while ignorance and innovation in religious matters is rife.

“One who will revive its religion for it”– Meaning, a scholar who is alive and well known. He will clarify the authentic Prophetic Sunnah and distinguish it from Bidah. knowledge will be abundant again and its adherents will be aided, and the proponents of Bidah will be overcome and degraded. This reviver is none else but a scholar who has a sound understanding of the religious sciences that deal with acts of worship, the underlying wisdom of the religion, and the texts that deal with beliefs of the heart. Examine those verses in the last part of Surah Al-Hashar!

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Al-Allamah Rabee bin Haadee Al-Madkhalee, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Many people humble themselves to one another more than they humble themselves to Allah – The Most High, The Most Great. It is neither permissible for a person to be a slave [i.e. neither worshipping nor submitting to anyone in a manner that only Allah deserves], except to Allah, nor humble himself except to the Greatness of Allah. Allah, Glorified be He and free is He from all imperfections, said:

He is Allah than Whom there is none who has the right to be worshipped but He; the King, the Holy, the One Free from all defects, the Giver of security, the Watcher over His creatures, the All-Mighty, the Compeller, the Supreme. Glory be to Allaah! [High is He] above all that they associate as partners with Him.  He is Allaah, the Creator, the Inventor of all things, the Bestower of forms. To Him belong the Best Names. All that is in the heavens and the earth glorify Him. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.  [Al-Hashar’ 23-24]

Examine those verses in the last part of Surah Al-Hashar! The statement:

He is Allah than Whom there is none who has the right to be worshipped but He)]: This necessitates Tawheed Al-Uluhiyyah.

The statement: [هُوَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ‌ۖ عَـٰلِمُ ٱلۡغَيۡبِ وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ‌ۖ هُوَ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ- He is Allah, than Whom there is none who has the right to be worshipped but He, the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen (open). He is the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful]: This necessitates Tawheed Al-Asmaa Was Sifaat.

And the statement: [هُوَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡخَـٰلِقُ ٱلۡبَارِئُ ٱلۡمُصَوِّرُ‌ۖ –  He is Allaah, the Creator, the Inventor of all things, the Bestower of forms” necessitates Tawheed Ar-Rububiyyah].

These few vreses in the last part of Surah Al-Hashr necessitate all the categories of Tawheed.

Souls Tested to Be Purified and Supported to Attain Victory

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

The souls will not become purified and upright until they are put to test through afflictions.

Shaikh Al-Islam, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Allah, The Most High, said:

Alif-Lam-Mim. Do people think that they will be left alone because they say: “We believe,” and will not be tested. And We indeed tested those who were before them. And Allah will certainly make (it) known (the truth of) those who are true, and will certainly make (it) known (the falsehood of) those who are liars; Or those who do evil deeds think that they can outstrip Us (i.e. escape Our Punishment)? Evil is that which they judge! Whoever hopes for the Meeting with Allah, then Allah’s Term is surely coming. and He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. And whosoever strives, he strives only for himself. Verily, Allah is free of all wants from the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinns, and all that exists). Those who believe [in the Oneness of Allah (Monotheism) and in Messenger Muhammad, and do not apostate because of the harm they receive from the polytheists], and do righteous good deeds, surely, We shall remit from them their evil deeds and shall reward them according to the best of that which they used to do. And We have enjoined on man to be good and dutiful to his parents, but if they strive to make you join with Me (in worship) anything (as a partner) of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not. Unto Me is your return, and I shall tell you what you used to do. And for those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah and other items of Faith) and do righteous good deeds, surely, We shall make them enter in (the entrance of) the righteous (i.e. in Paradise). Of mankind are some who say: “We believe in Allah,” but if they are made to suffer for the sake of Allah, they consider the trial of mankind as Allah’s punishment, and if victory comes from your Lord, (the hypocrites) will say: “Verily! We were with you (helping you).” Is not Allah Best Aware of what is in the breast of the ‘Alamin (mankind and jinns). Verily, Allah knows those who believe, and verily, He knows the hypocrites. [Al-Ankabut. 1-11]

Allah, The Most High, said:

Or think you that you will enter Paradise without such (trials) as came to those who passed away before you? They were afflicted with severe poverty and ailments and were so shaken that even the Messenger and those who believed along with him said, “When (will come) the Help of Allah?” Yes! Certainly, the Help of Allah is near! [Al-Baqarah. 214]

Whenever a Messenger is sent to the people, they find themselves in two situations: either some of them say, “We believe” or they refrain from saying “We believe”, rather they persist in evil deeds. Those who say, “We believe” face trials and tests from their Lord, The Mighty and Majestic, to make known those who are truthful and those who are liars. The one who did not say, “We believe” should not think that he will not be put to trial and test, for indeed no one can escape Allah, The Most High.

This is the way of Allah – (based on perfect justice, knowledge and perfect wisdom, and free is He from all imperfections). He sends Messengers to the people, but they belie and harm them.

Allah said:

Likewise, no Messenger came to those before them, but they said: ‘’A sorcerer or a madman!’’ [Adh-Dhaariyaat. 52]

Those who believe in the Messengers and obey them are shown enmity and harmed and tested through what causes them pain; but those who do not believe in the Messengers will receive pain that is greater and more abiding. Therefore, every soul will encounter pain -whether it believes or disbelieves; but a believer encounters harm in the worldly life in the beginning, then praiseworthy outcomes.

As for the one who disbelieves, he receives blessings at first and pain thereafter. A man asked Imam Ash-Shaafi’ee, may Allah have mercy upon him, “What would be better – that one is granted strength and the authority to establish the path of Allah and His Messengers without any hindrance from those who belie or oppose Allah and His Messengers, or face trials?” Ash- Shaafi’ee said to him, “One will not be given strength and the authority to follow the path of Allah without any hindrance from those who belie or oppose Allah and His Messengers until after facing trials; for indeed Allah tried Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, Eesa and Muhammad, then after having patience, they were granted authority and strength to establish the path of Allah without hindrance”. Therefore, one should never think that he will escape pain.

This is a great principle, thus, it is obligated to a sane person to be acquainted with it. Everyone will face afflictions, for indeed a person is a social being who has to live with people. The people have wants and perceptions, and will seek to make him agree with them. If he disagrees with them, they harm and punish him; but if he agrees with them, sometimes they harm him and at other times he is harmed by others.

Whoever examines his circumstances and that of the people will find that this does occur a lot. Take for example the case of a people who desire lewd conduct and wrong doing -who make false statements concerning the religion or utter shirk – and commit sins similar to that which Allah stated (in Surah Al- A’raaf verse 33) [1], while they are in a place- a campus, a convoy, a large block of public buildings with stores, or a roofed market place, bazaar, a school, a hospice, a town, a narrow mountain pass or a city – with other people and are not able to commit (the evil) they desire, unless others either agree with them or refrain from rebuking them; so, they either seek the approval of others or ask them to keep quiet. If they (those asked to agree with evil) agree or refrain from rebuking (them), they are saved from their evil in the beginning, but then they are the ones responsible for giving the upper hand to the (perpetrators), who will humiliate and punish them in a manner that is more severe than what they feared at first, such as asking them for a false testimony or to utter false statements about the religion or to aid them commit lewd conduct and oppression. If they reject the request, they are harmed and shown enmity; but if they agree, they are responsible for subduing themselves, thus they are humiliated more than what they feared at first or they are punished by others. Therefore, the obligation is what Aa’isha, may Allah be pleased with her, said to Mu’aawiyah, may Allah be pleased with him and his father:

“Indeed, whoever seeks the pleasure of the people at the expense of Allah’s Pleasure will (earn) Allah’s displeasure and Allah will cause the people to be displeased with him. And the praise of the people will become blame against him. And whoever seeks Allah’s Pleasure at the expense of people’s pleasure, will (earn) Allah’s Pleasure and Allah will cause the people to be pleased with him.”

This (seeking the pleasure of the people at the expense of Allah’s Pleasure) is perpetrated by those who aid the kings and leaders in their corrupt goals [2], as well as the people who aid the people of Bidah -who attribute themselves to knowledge and adherence to the religion- to commit their Bidah. As for the one whom Allah guides and enables to follow guidance in affairs of the religion, he is prevented from committing haram and exercises patience when harmed and shown enmity. Thereafter, he will receive a praiseworthy outcome in this worldly life and the Hereafter, similar to what happened to the Messengers and their followers, the Muhaajiroon in this Ummah, the (upright) scholars, devout worshippers, merchants and leaders when they faced those harmed and showed them enmity.

Allah states in several verses of the Qur’an that the people will be put to trial through prosperity and adversity, thus, a person is in need of exercising patience and being thankful to Allah. Allah [The Most High] said:

Verily! We have made that which is on earth as an adornment for it, in order that We may test them (mankind) as to which of them are best in deeds. [i.e. those who do good deeds in the most perfect manner, that means to do them (deeds) totally for Allah’s sake and in accordance to the legal ways of the Prophet] [Al-Kahf. 7]

Allah said:

Do you think that you will enter Paradise before Allah tests those of you who fought (in His Cause) and (also) tests those who are As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.)? [Aal Imraan. 142]

Allah said in Surah Al-Baqarah:

Or think you that you will enter Paradise without such (trials) as came to those who passed away before you? They werea fflicted with severe poverty and ailments and were so shaken that even the Messenger and those who believed along with him said, “When (will come) the Help of Allah?” Yes! Certainly, the Help of Allah is near! [Verse 214]

This is because the soul will not become purified and upright until it is put to test through afflictions, just as gold cannot acquire its pristine state until it is refined to separate it from other less precious metals. However, if a person is (guilty of) wrongdoing, he is not visited by evil except as result of such behaviour. Allah said:

Whatever of good reaches you, is from Allah, but whatever of evil befalls you, is from yourself. And We have sent you (O Muhammad ) as a Messenger to mankind, and Allah is Sufficient as a Witness.[An-Nisaa. 79]

Allah said:

And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much. (See the Qur’an Verse 35:45). [Ash-Shura’ 30]

Allah said:

That is so because Allah will never change a grace which He has bestowed on a people until they change what is in their ownselves. And verily, Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower. [Al-Anfaal 53]

Indeed, Allah mentions the reason behind the punishment sent to the nations of the past and what will happen to the people till the day of judgement because of their wrongdoing. Our first parents – Adam and Hawaa- were the first to acknowledge this fact. Allah informs us that they said:

Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You forgive us not, and bestow not upon us Your Mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers.” [Al-A’raaf. 23]

Allah informs us that Iblees said:

O my Lord! Because you misled me, I shall indeed adorn the path of error for them (mankind) on the earth, and I shall mislead them all. “Except Your chosen, (guided) slaves among them. [Al-Hijr’ 39-40].

Then Allah said:

“Certainly, you shall have no authority over My slaves, except those who follow you of the Ghawin (Mushrikun and those who go astray, criminals, polytheists, and evil doers, etc.). [Al-Hijr’ 42]

In a Hadith Qudsi reported by Abu Dhar, may Allah be pleased with him, he said that Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said that Allah says:

“O My Slaves! It is only your deeds that I record for you and then recompense for you; so, whoever finds good, let him praise Allah, and whoever finds something else, then blame no one but himself.” [Sahih Muslim 2577]

It is reported in a Hadith about seeking forgiveness that a person (should say):

O Allah, You are my Lord! There is no one who has the right to be worshipped except you. You created me and I am your slave, and I am (sincere) to my covenant and promise (to You) as much as I am able. I seek refuge with You from the evil I have done. I acknowledge in your presence all the blessings You have granted me, and I confess to You my sins. So forgive me, for indeed none is able to forgive (a slave his) sins, except You.’’ [Al-Bukhaari 6323]

The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,  used to say in his sermons: “All praises and thanks is to Allah; we seek His Aid and Assistance; and we seek Allah’s refuge from the evils of ourselves and the evil consequences of our deeds. [Sahih Muslim. 868]

The Prophet said: “My example and the example of the people is that of a man who made a fire, and when it lighted what was around it, moths and other insects started falling into the fire. The man tried (his best) to prevent them (from falling in the fire), but they overpowered him and rushed into the fire . Similarly, I take hold of the knots at your waist (belts) to prevent you from falling into the fire, but you insist on falling into it. [Al-Bukhaari. 6483]

The Prophet likened us to moths, because of its ignorance (regarding the danger behind that light from the fire), impulsiveness and un-insightful behaviour. It is well known that a moth moves quickly (towards the light of the fire) due to being ignorant (of the consequences), and this why it is said that the one who follows another person who misguides him is befooled and misled.

Allah said about Fir’awn:

Thus he [Fir’aun (Pharaoh)] be fooled and misled his people, and they obeyed him. [Az-Zukhruf’ 54]

Allah said:

And let not those who have no certainty of faith, discourage you from conveying Allah’s Message (which you are obliged to convey)]. [Ar-Rum. 60]

Unlike the person upon certainty, the person who has no certainty in faith (or lacks certainty) does not remain firm, rather he acts carelessly, whereas certainty is the firm Iman in the heart based on knowledge and action. It may be that a person has knowledge but does not exercise patience during calamities; rather he is swayed by emotion. Al-Hasan Al-Basri, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: “If you wish to see someone with insight but has no patience, you will see him; and if you wish to see someone who has patience but not insight, you will see him; but if you see a person who has insight as well as patience, he is the one mentioned by Allah in the verse:

And We made from among them (Children of Israel), leaders, giving guidance under Our Command, when they were patient and used to believe with certainty in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.)]. [As-Sajdah’. 24]

Let’s always strive to be truthful because “He knows the fraud of the eyes, and all that the breasts conceal”

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah, The Exalted, says:

Allah knows the fraud of the eyes, and all that the breasts conceal. [Ghafir. 19]

[يَعْلَمُ خَآئِنَةَ ٱلْأَعْيُنِ – Allah knows the fraud of the eyes]: This pertains to the gaze that an individual conceals from their sitting partner and companions. It is discreetly stealing a glance.

[وَمَا تُخْفِى ٱلصُّدُورُ – and all that the breasts conceal]: This pertains to the undisclosed actions of an individual. Allah is aware of these concealed deeds. (1)

Allah, The Exalted, says:

Verily, Allah is the All-Knower of the unseen of the heavens and the earth. Verily! He is the All-Knower of that is in the breasts. [Fatir. 38]

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

It is obligated to a person to be mindful that Allah (knows, hears, and sees everything about them). This awareness should prompt them to focus their attention on Allah, The Mighty and Majestic, directing all their intentions, hopes, and aspirations toward Allah, and their primary concern should always be to seek what pleases Allah. (2)

Allah, The Exalted, says:

Say: “I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, the (only) Deity (in truth) of mankind, from the evil of the whisperer (the devil) who whispers evil and withdraws (from his whispering after one remembers Allah), who whispers in the breasts of mankind, of jinns and men.

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Why (the mention of the word) “Breast” and not “Hearts”? Contemplate the underlying reason behind Allah’s statement: [ٱلَّذِى يُوَسْوِسُ فِى صُدُورِ ٱلنَّاسِ – who whispers in the breasts of mankind]; but Allah did not say, “in their hearts”. As-Sadr (breast) serves as the courtyard and residence of the heart, where all matters pass through before reaching the heart. They gather in the breast before making their way into the heart, functioning as a corridor for it. Those who grasp this will comprehend Allah’s statement:

[It was] so that Allah might test what is in your breasts and purify what is in your hearts]. [Aal-Imran. 154]

Satan infiltrates the heart’s courtyard and dwelling place, casting whatever he desires to cast into the heart; whispers in breast, and his insinuations reach the heart. This is why Allah [The Exalted] says: [فَوَسْوَسَ إِلَيْهِ الشَّيْطَانُ – Then Satan whispered to him] and did not say, “In him” because the meaning is that he cast that to him and conveyed it to him, so it entered his heart. The heart may be initially untainted; then influenced by whispers (temptations). Sin crosses the mind, causing the heart to imagine and desire it. Gradually, this desire takes on a deceptive allure, captivating the self and leading it astray. Despite the heart’s awareness of the harm and evil consequences, sin continues to be portrayed as desirable, hindering the person from truly understanding its true nature. As a result, the focus shifts solely to the image of sin and indulgence, causing one to forget what lies beyond. This willfully chosen path transforms into an unwavering determination, intensifying the heart’s eagerness to indulge in wrongdoing. (3)

The highest level of truthfulness

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Shaikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

The highest level of truthfulness is the level of the Siddeeqeen, which is complete submission to the (commands and prohibitions) of the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, alongside perfect sincerity to the One who sent him as a Messenger (i.e. Allah).”

Beautiful Shyness

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said, “Be shy of Allah (in a manner) that shyness should be”. They (i.e. the companions ) said, “We do feel shy of Allah, and all praise and thanks be to Allah”. The prophet said, “It is not like that; rather the one who is truly shy of Allah, let him safeguard his head and what it carries, safeguards the stomach and what it carries, remembers death and affliction. And he who wants the Hereafter should do away with the adornments of this life, then indeed he is truly shy of Allah, The Mighty and Majestic”.

Al-Mubarakfuri, may Allah have mercy upon him, commented on the statement of the Messenger, “Be shy of Allah (in a manner) that shyness should be”– Meaning, “A firm, abiding and truthful shyness”.

And regarding the statement of the companions of the Prophet, “We do feel shy of Allah”, Al-Mubarakfuri said, “They said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! We do feel shy of Allah and all praise and thanks be to Allah’, but they did not say, ‘We are truly shy of Allah’ due to their acknowledgment of the fact that they are unable to do so’.

And regarding their statement, ‘And all praise and thanks be to Allah’ – Meaning, all praise and thanks be to Allah for granting us Tawfeeq [i.e. for guiding and enabling us to perform righteous deeds].

And regarding the statement of the Messenger, “It (i.e. shyness) is not like that”. Al-Mubarakfuri said, “Meaning, true shyness is not what you think; rather it is to safeguard all the limbs from what is not pleasing to Allah”.

And regarding the statement of the Messenger, “Rather the one who is truly shy of Allah, let him safeguard his head and what it carries; safeguards the stomach and what it carries; remembers death and affliction. And he who wants the Hereafter should do away with the adornments of this life, then indeed he is truly shy of Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic]”. Al-Mubarakfuri said, “Meaning, safeguard the head by refraining from utilising it in disobedience to Allah. Do not prostrate to other than Allah and refrain from showoff whilst praying. Neither lower your head (in humility) for other than the sake of Allah nor raise it out of pride. And with regards to what the head carries, such as the tongue, the eyes, and the ears, do not utilise them for haram. Safeguard the stomach by refraining from eating haram as well as safeguarding what is connected to it, such as the private parts, the legs, the two hands, and the heart”.

And regarding the statement of the Prophet, “Remembers death and affliction”– Meaning, “Remember death and your abode in the grave”.

And regarding the statement, “And he who wants the Hereafter should do away with the adornments of this life”– Meaning, “Because the two cannot be combined in a perfect manner, even those who are strong (in Iman) cannot do so (i.e. perfect desire for the afterlife has to be combined with abandoning those enjoyable things of the worldly life which one can do without). So, whoever does this (i.e. the things mentioned this hadeeth), then indeed he is truly shy of Allah.
