A Muslim should not behave like the people of Aad–Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz (rahimahullaah)

Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz (rahimahullaah) stated about the statement of Allaah:

وَإِذَا بَطَشْتُمْ بَطَشْتُمْ جَبَّارِينَ

”And when you seize, you seize as tyrants?” [26:130]

This is a rebuke from Allaah against Aad-the people of Hud (alayhis-salaam). Allaah rebuked them with this and that they are oppressors who strike people without right. They oppress people by way of striking, killing and seizing wealth by force. This is a rebuke against them and a blameworthy trait of theirs. Therefore, this is not permissible; rather it is obligated on a Muslim that he does not take wealth except based on what is right and he does not strike anyone except based on what is right. He neither has a right to transgress against the people nor to strike them; rather he seeks what is right through the path of the Islamic Law. If he has a right to seek after, he should seek it through the courts; through an upright path and through the authorities. He does not strike the people by way of oppression, transgression and injury. He should not oppress them by confiscating their wealth and striking; rather it is obligated on him to take his rights through the path of the Islamic Law and from an Islamic perspective. This (i.e. this statement of Allaah) is a rebuke against Aad and a blameworthy affair for which Allaah sent a devastating barren wind against them. They used to oppress the people and transgressed against them. [Source: Slightly Paraphrased. see link: http://www.binbaz.org.sa/mat/9111 ]

[5] Allaah’s Various Types of Punishments and Their Causes—Shaikh Abdullaah Ibn Salfeeq Adh-Dhufayree (may Allaah preserve him)

The Path to safety from disobedience

O slaves of Allaah! Safety (from disobedience is achieved by way of) repentance; so wake up from your heedlessness before what has befallen others befalls you. The enemies of Allaah do not overwhelm the obstinate ones among the Muslims except due to sins and disobedience. Chaos and restlessness does not occur except due to (the presence of actions that are in) opposition to the Qur’aan and the Sunnah, and except due to (the presence of) shirk, disobedience, bidah and (actions that are) in opposition to (the path of) Allaah and His Messenger. So O slaves of Allaah! Remember Allaah in times of ease; repent to Allaah in times of ease and thank Him in times of ease, and He will save you during hardship and distress. All the sons of Adam commit mistakes (or sins) and the best of those who sin (or commit mistakes) are those who repent. And remember the statement of Allaah (The Most High):

[نَبِّئۡ عِبَادِىٓ أَنِّىٓ أَنَا ٱلۡغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ] ”Declare (O Muhammad) unto My slaves, that truly, I am the Oft-Forgiving, the Most-Merciful.” [15:49]

And remember the statement of Allaah (The Most High):

فَلَمَّا جَآءَ أَمۡرُنَا جَعَلۡنَا عَـٰلِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمۡطَرۡنَا عَلَيۡهَا حِجَارَةً۬ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ۬ مَّنضُودٍ۬

مُّسَوَّمَةً عِندَ رَبِّكَ‌ۖ وَمَا هِىَ مِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ بِبَعِيدٍ۬

”So when Our Commandment came, We turned (the towns of Sodom in Palestine) upside down, and rained on them stones of baked clay, piled up; Marked from your Lord, and they are not ever far from the Zalimun(polytheists, evil-doers, etc.).” [11:82-83]

There is no relationship between Allaah and His creation except through (their) obedience to Allaah and fear of Him.

[4] Allaah’s Various Types of Punishments and Their Causes—Shaikh Abdullaah Ibn Salfeeq Adh-Dhufayree (may Allaah preserve him)

It is obligatory to ponder upon the punishments that were afflicted on the previous nations

Allaah (The Most High) promise to punish the Faasiqeen [rebellious, disobedient people] just as it happened to those before them–(punishments) by way of [خَسف—swallowed by the earth]; [ نَسف– wind blast]; [ريح—wind] and destruction, and punished for inattentiveness (to Allaah’s commandments and prohibitions) and heedlessness. [1] Allaah (The Most High):

”Do then those who devise evil plots feel secure that Allah will not sink them into the earth, or that the torment will not seize them from directions they perceive not? Or that He may catch them in the midst of their going to and fro (in their jobs), so that there be no escape for them (from Allah’s Punishment)? Or that He may catch them with gradual wasting (of their wealth and health). Truly! Your Lord is indeed full of Kindness, Most Merciful?” [16:45-47]

Allaah (The Most High) said:

”Did the people of the towns then feel secure against the coming of Our Punishment by night while they are asleep? Or, did the people of the towns then feel secure against the coming of Our Punishment in the forenoon while they play? Did they then feel secure against the Plan of Allah. None feels secure from the Plan of Allah except the people who are the losers. [7:97-99]

Allaah (The Most High) said:

مِّمَّا خَطِيٓـَٔـٰتِہِمۡ أُغۡرِقُواْ فَأُدۡخِلُواْ نَارً۬ا

‘’Because of their sins they were drowned.’’ [71:25]

And Allaah (The Most High) said:

فَلَمَّآ ءَاسَفُونَا ٱنتَقَمۡنَا مِنۡهُمۡ فَأَغۡرَقۡنَـٰهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِينَ

”So when they angered Us, We punished them, and drowned them all.’’ [43:55]

O Slaves of Allaah! Indeed Allaah is [الْجَبَّار –The Exalted and All Mighty Compeller]; [الْقَوِيُّ -The One Perfect In Strength]; [الْوَاحِدُ –The One and Only (Who has no partner in His Names, Attributes and Actions and Allaah alone deserves to be worshipped) etc] and Allaah is [الْقَهَّار -The Overwhelming Subduer Who is Never Overcome]. Allaah shows the slaves signs and punishments by way of which they can reflect and contemplate; so that they may return to obedience and not remain in their misguidance and heedlessness.

How much wisdom is there regarding the afflictions with which Allaah afflicts some of the slaves and not others!? And from that wisdom–and Allaah knows best–is so that they serve as a lesson for those who are present concerning (the affair of those who) have preceded; and so that they may take heed concerning what has already gone by and prepare themselves for what is to come.

Allaah’s admonitions and reprimands are of various types: sometimes it is by way of drowning, just as the people of Nooh were destroyed through drowning; sometimes it is by way of winds, just as Allaah destroyed the people of Ad by way of that; sometimes it is by way of (severe torment- destructive loud thunder bolts), just as Allaah destroyed Thamood by way of that (i.e. thunderbolts followed by an earthquake); sometimes is it by way of turning their houses upside down just as Allaah destroyed the people of Lut by way of that; sometimes is it by way of a violent wind with shower of stones just as Allaah destroy shu’aib’s people by way of that. [2] And sometimes it is by way of enemies who are given the upper hand, just as Allaah gave a people who had extreme strength in war fare the upper hand over Bani Israa’eel. [3]

Allaah (Glorified and Exalted Be He) commanded us to reflect upon, saying:

Say: “Behold all that is in the heavens and the earth,” but neither Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) nor warners benefit those who believe not. Then do they wait for (anything) save for (destruction) like the days of the men who passed away before them? Say: “Wait then, I am (too) with you among those who wait.” Then (in the end) We save Our Messengers and those who believe! Thus it is incumbent upon Us to save the believers. [10:101-103]

O slaves of Allaah! However with great sorrow, these calamities, miseries, admonitions and wars that we see here and there and hear about, are in reality a chastisement from Allaah upon His slaves, so that they may return (to Allaah in repentance and obedience) and seek rescue and delieverance from Allaah. Allaah (The Most High) said: [فَلَوۡلَآ إِذۡ جَآءَهُم بَأۡسُنَا تَضَرَّعُواْ ] ‘’When Our Torment reached them, why then did they not believe with humility?’’ Meaning: Did they humble themselves when our Torment reached them? [وَلَـٰكِن قَسَتۡ قُلُوبُہُمۡ وَزَيَّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلشَّيۡطَـٰنُ مَا ڪَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ ] ‘’But their hearts became hardened, and Shaitan (Satan) made fair-seeming to them that which they used to do.’’ [6:43]

Therefore O slaves of Allaah! Indeed it is a calamity that these afflictions have reached many people but they still remain upon what they are upon. They have neither turned away from their sins nor repent to Allaah (Glorified and Exalted Be He). The one who stays away from the congregational prayer has not ceased doing so; the who does not pay attention to his children and their upbringing has not ceased doing so and has not woken up; the one who eats usury and engages in forbidden dealings is still not paying attention and turning away (from his sin). This is the case with regards to all other acts of disobedience and major sins. The people remain upon their misguidance and increase in it-neither being reminded nor learning lessons.

Footnotes in booklet:

[1] Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said, ‘’From the punishments for sins are (the following): Indeed it causes blessings to cease and brings about punishment. A blessing does not cease from a slave and punishment does not befall a slave except due to sin; just as Ali Ibn Abee Taalib (radiyallaahu-anhu) said: A calamity does not descend except due to sin and a calamity is not removed except due to repentance. And indeed Allaah (Glorified and Exalted Be He said:

[وَمَآ أَصَـٰبَڪُم مِّن مُّصِيبَةٍ۬ فَبِمَا كَسَبَتۡ أَيۡدِيكُمۡ وَيَعۡفُواْ عَن كَثِيرٍ۬] And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much.’’ [42:30]

And Allaah (The Most High) said: [ذَٲلِكَ بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَمۡ يَكُ مُغَيِّرً۬ا نِّعۡمَةً أَنۡعَمَهَا عَلَىٰ قَوۡمٍ حَتَّىٰ يُغَيِّرُواْ مَا بِأَنفُسِہِمۡ‌ۙ] ‘’ That is so because Allah will never change a grace which He has bestowed on a people until they change what is in their ownselves.‘’ [8:53]

So Allaah (The Most High) informed (us) that He does not replace the blessing He bestows on any individual unless the person changes his/her own state of affairs-by replacing obedience to Allaah with disobedience; replacing gratefulness to Allaah with ungratefulness; replacing the means to Allaah’s Pleasure with the means leading to Allaah’s Displeasure. When a person changes, Allaah changes his state of affairs as an exact recompense (according to his evil crimes). [وَمَا رَبُّكَ بِظَلَّـٰمٍ۬ لِّلۡعَبِيدِ] ‘’And your Lord is not at all unjust to (His) slaves.’’ [41:46] If he (the person) replaces obedience with disobedience, Allaah replaces his state of wellbeing with punishment and his state of honour with humiliation.

[2]Allaah (Glorified and Exalted Be He) said:

‘’So We punished each (of them) for his sins, of them were some on whom We sent Hasiban (a violent wind with shower of stones) [as the people of Lout (Lot)], and of them were some who were overtaken by As-Saihah [torment – awful cry, etc. (as Thamud or Shu’aib’s people)], and of them were some whom We caused the earth to swallow [as Qarun (Korah)], and of them were some whom We drowned [as the people of Nuh (Noah), or Fir’aun (Pharaoh) and his people]. It was not Allah Who wronged them, but they wronged themselves.’’ [29:40]

[3]Allaah (Glorified and Exalted Be He) said: [فَإِذَا جَآءَ وَعۡدُ أُولَٮٰهُمَا بَعَثۡنَا عَلَيۡڪُمۡ عِبَادً۬ا لَّنَآ أُوْلِى بَأۡسٍ۬ شَدِيدٍ۬ فَجَاسُواْ خِلَـٰلَ ٱلدِّيَارِ‌ۚ وَكَانَ وَعۡدً۬ا مَّفۡعُولاً۬  ]

‘’So, when the promise came for the first of the two, We sent against you slaves of Ours given to terrible warfare. They entered the very innermost parts of your homes. And it was a promise (completely) fulfilled.’’ [17:5]

Pharaoh and his bunch of [sinful rebellious] idiots

Allaah  (The Most High) said: [وَقَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ] ”Fir’aun (Pharaoh) said’’ with haughtiness and tyranny, whilst deluding his foolish people; [ذَرُونِي أَقْتُلْ مُوسَىٰ وَلْيَدْعُ رَبَّهُ ] ‘’Leave me to kill Musa (Moses), and let him call his Lord (to stop me from killing him)!’’ [Soorah Ghafir: Ayah 26]

It was his claim that had it not been for his consideration of the wishes of his people, he would have killed Musa, and (Musa’s) supplication to his Lord would not have prevented him from that. He then mentioned what made him want to kill Musa and that he is a sincere adviser to his people, and that he wished to remove mischief from the land.  Allaah (The Most High) said that he said:

[إِنِّي أَخَافُ أَنْ يُبَدِّلَ دِينَكُمْ أَوْ أَنْ يُظْهِرَ فِي الْأَرْضِ الْفَسَادَ] ‘’I fear that he (Musa) may change your religion, or that he may cause mischief to appear in the land!” [Soorah Ghaafir: Ayah 26]

This is the most amazing the affair can be! The evilest one among the creation gives advice to the people against the best among the creation. This is disguised falsehood and propaganda, which cannot seize except the intellects of those (people) about whom Allaah stated: [فَاسْتَخَفَّ قَوْمَهُ فَأَطَاعُوهُ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَوْمًا فَاسِقِينَ] ”Thus he [Fir’aun (Pharaoh)] befooled and misled his people, and they obeyed him. Verily, they were ever a people who were Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah).’’[Soorah Az-Zukhruf: Ayah 54]

[3] Allaah’s Various Types of Punishments and Their Causes—Shaikh Abdullaah Ibn Salfeeq Adh-Dhufayree (may Allaah preserve him)

Following desires (as a source of punishment upon a person)

O slaves of Allaah! Observe this (affair) regarding the one who abandons the Sunnah and the way of the Salaf; you will find him preoccupied in deviation and innovation (in religious affairs) until he reaches -by way of this affair- a state of breaking point in the religion, or excommunicating Muslims (unlawfully) and shedding the blood of the Muslims; (1) and similar to this (also) are the people of disobedience and major sins, until their hearts become like an upturned vessel. (Hearts, which) neither recognize good nor reject evil. (2) And acts of disobedience stimulate one another until it becomes that–as you witness today– committing acts of disobedience is what many people are accustomed with and obedience to Allaah becomes something strange. (3) And from the most dangerous of that is what you witness with regards to the Salaah and its strict observance; for how many people and households have become negligent regarding it!

————————————————————————-

(1) Footnotes as it appeared in the Booklet: Imaam Barbahaari (rahimahullaah said: ”Beware of small innovations because they grow until they become large. This is the case with every innovation introduced in this Ummah. It began as something small, bearing resemblance to the truth which is why those who entered it were misled and then were unable to leave it. So it grew and became the religion which they followed and thus deviated from the Straight Path and left Islaam.”

Translator’s notes: [Note: Bidah is of two types: Bidah that exits a person from the fold of Islaam and Bidah that does not exit a person from the fold of Islaam. (See the comments of Shaikh Ahmad Najmi (rahimahullaah) in his explanation of this above statement of Imaam Barbahaaree in Publisher: Daarul Minhaaj. 1st Ed 2009)]

(2) Footnotes as it appeared in the Booklet: The Hadeeth of Hudhaifah: He (radiyallaahu-anhu) said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) saying: The Fitan (trials and temptations) will be presented to hearts (of the people) as reed mat is woven stick by stick. So any heart which is absorbed by them will have a black mark put into it, but any heart which rejects them will have a white mark put in it. The result is that there will become two types of hearts: one white like a white stone which will not be harmed by any turmoil or temptation, so long as the heavens and the earth endure; and the other black and dust-coloured like a vessel which is upturned—(Hearts that will) neither recognize what is good nor reject what is evil, but being absorbed with desires. [Saheeh Muslim. Kitaab Al-Imaan. Chapter 65: Islaam began as something strange and it will return as something strange. Hadeeth Number: 144]

(3)Footnotes as it appeared in the Booklet: This is an evidence of the testification regarding Islaam’s strangeness in this era, the decrease of knowledge and ignorance regarding that which Allaah sent His Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) with, until good has become evil in the eyes of many of the people and evil has become good; and the Sunnah has become bidah (in their eyes of the people) and bidah has become Sunnah. This (state of affairs) is a testification to the hadeeth reported by Bukhaari Number 80 and Muslim 2671 from Anas (radiyallaahu-anhu), who said: The Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said: From among the portents of the Hour are (the following): Religious knowledge will be taken away (by the death of Religious learned men); Ignorance (of Religion) will prevail; Drinking of Alcoholic drinks (will be very common) and there will be prevalence of open illegal sexual intercourse.

[2] A Description of the One Who Abandoned Knowledge of the Book and Preferred the Dunya over the Aakhirah

Ibn Jurayj (rahimahullaah) said:

A dog’s heart is disconnected (i.e. inattentive) and it is (as if) it does not have a heart. It lolls it’s tongue out whether driven away or left alone. This is similar to the one who abandoned guidance; for it is (as if) he does not have a heart (to make him attentive); rather his heart is disconnected. The intent behind Ibn Jurayj’s statement that the dog’s heart is disconnected (i.e. inattentive) is that it does not possess (that type of) heart to enable it to exercise patience and abandon lolling its tongue out. This is also the case regarding the one who abandons the Aayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc) of Allaah. He is not left with a heart that will enable him to exercise patience with the worldly (goods) and to abandon exerting himself for them. So this person exerts himself for the sake of the worldly (goods) due to the little patience he possesses and the dog lolls its tongue out due to the little patience it possesses when in need of water.

A dog is among those animals with the least patience when thirsty and in need of water. It eats the moist earth out of thirst, even though it does have some patience when in need of food. Nevertheless, among all animals it lolls its tongue out the most, whether it is standing, sitting, moving or not moving. The intense desire inside it necessitates that it will always loll it’s tongue. Likewise, this is the affair of that person likened to the dog; the extreme eagerness and burning desire in his heart necessitates that he will always exert himself (for the worldly goods at the expense of the Aakhirah). He still exerts himself whether he is admonished and advised, and he still exerts himself when not admonished.

Mujaahid (rahimahullaah) said:

This is similar to the one given knowledge of the Book, but he does not act upon it. Ibn Abbaas (radiyallaahu-anhumaa) said: If you direct him towards wisdom, he does not carry it, and if you leave him alone he is not guided towards good, just like the dog that lolls it’s tongue out whether it is taking a rest or driven away.

Al-Hasan (rahimahullaah) said:

It is the Munaafiq. He does not remain firm upon the truth whether he is called or left alone; whether he is admonished or not admonished, just like the dog that lolls its tongue out whether driven away or left alone.

So Allaah (The Most High) gave an example of the one who abandoned His Aayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc), saying: He is misguided whether you admonish him or leave him alone, just like the dog that lolls its tongue out whether driven away or left alone. This Ayah (i.e. A’raaf 176) is similar to the saying of Allaah (The Most High):

[وَإِن تَدۡعُوهُمۡ إِلَى ٱلۡهُدَىٰ لَا يَتَّبِعُوڪُمۡ‌ۚ سَوَآءٌ عَلَيۡكُمۡ أَدَعَوۡتُمُوهُمۡ أَمۡ أَنتُمۡ صَـٰمِتُونَ  ] ”And if you call them to guidance, they follow you not. It is the same for you whether you call them or you keep silent.” [7:193]

[1] Lets share these reminders and benefits from Shaikh Ramzaan Al-Haajiriy (may Allaah preserve him)

The Shaikh (may Allaah preserve him) said:

The Prophet (sallal laahu alayhi-sallam) was clear with everyone regarding his call. When he arrived in Madeenah -at that vicinity of Masjid Quba (i.e. which he later built as the first Masjid)- he disseminated the call with its clarity and purity; so it made the hypocrites conceal themselves and they did not receive it except by manifesting Islaam, whilst surely hiding what they hid (i.e. disbelief in their hearts). This is likewise the habit of the people of falsehood; they do not make apparent what they (truly) believe. As for the people of clarity, they are people who openly proclaim (what they truly believe); so beware of the people who hide.

[2] Allaah’s Various Types of Punishments and Their Causes—Shaikh Abdullaah Ibn Salfeeq Adh-Dhufayree (may Allaah preserve him)

The punishments for sins and disobedience do vary depending on the level of the offences. Sometimes the punishment occurs in one’s religion and it is the greatest of punishments. It is (when) the act of disobedience comes between a person and Imaan (1) and between him and Husnul khaatimah. (2)

If every single one of us scrutinizes himself attentively, he will find that whenever he commits a sin and did not repent from it by way of (changing his state); indeed he will find that he did commit a greater sin than it previously. And the attestation to this is His (i.e. Allaah’s) statement: [فَلَمَّا زَاغُوٓاْ أَزَاغَ ٱللَّهُ قُلُوبَهُمۡ‌ۚ] ”So when they turned away (from the Path of Allah), Allah turned their hearts away (from the Right Path).” [ 61:5]

Allaah (The Most High) said: [وَنُقَلِّبُ أَفۡـِٔدَتَہُمۡ وَأَبۡصَـٰرَهُمۡ كَمَا لَمۡ يُؤۡمِنُواْ بِهِۦۤ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ۬ وَنَذَرُهُمۡ فِى طُغۡيَـٰنِهِمۡ يَعۡمَهُونَ] ”And We shall turn their hearts and their eyes away (from guidance), as they refused to believe therein for the first time, and We shall leave them in their trespass to wander blindly.” [6:110]

And Allaah (The Most High) said: [فَأَعۡقَبَہُمۡ نِفَاقً۬ا فِى قُلُوبِہِمۡ إِلَىٰ يَوۡمِ يَلۡقَوۡنَهُ ۥ بِمَآ أَخۡلَفُواْ ٱللَّهَ مَا وَعَدُوهُ وَبِمَا ڪَانُواْ يَكۡذِبُونَ] ”So He punished them by putting hypocrisy into their hearts till the Day whereon they shall meet Him, because they broke that (covenant with Allah) which they had promised Him and because they used to tell lies.” [9:77]

 Translator’s Notes:

[1] An act of disobedience comes between a person and Imaan: Imaam Sadi (rahimahullaah) stated about the Ayah:

[وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ يَحُولُ بَيْنَ الْمَرْءِ وَقَلْبِهِ ] ‘’And know that Allah comes in between a person and his heart.”  Therefore, beware of rejecting the command of Allaah when it comes to you at first, lest He comes between you and it [i.e. Allaah (The Most High) prevents you from guidance as a just recompense) when you turn away from it and your hearts (turn) in opposition– for indeed Allaah intervenes between a person and his heart—Allaah causes it (i.e. the heart of the person) to change and turns it in any direction as He wills (i.e. as a just recompense for the one who rejects or turns away from the truth). Therefore, a slave (i.e. the Muslim) should increase in (uttering) the statement (i.e. the Du’aa): ”O turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm upon your Religion; O turner of the hearts, turn my heart towards obedience to You.” [For further details, see [For further details, see Tayseer Al-Kareem Ar-Rahmaan Fee Tafseer Kalaam Al-Mannaan] [Also see Tafseer of this ayah in Al-Fawaa-id of Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) pages 140-144. [2]Husnul Khaatimah: (i.e. A Muslim leaves this world in obedience to Allaah and in obedience to Allaah’s Messenger; or leaves this world in a state confirmed to be a good end by textual proof. Imaam Albaani (rahimahullaah) stated some of these good signs in Ahkaam Al-Janaa-iz and from them: [a] The one who dies whilst uttering the Shahaadah; [b] The one who dies during the day or night on Friday; [c] Death by way of a plague, drowning etc; [d] The woman who dies during the period of post natal bleeding as a result of giving birth; [e] death by fire; death through defending one’s wealth against a robber etc [See Ahkaam Al-Janaa-iz pages 21-24 –Shaikh Albaani (rahimahullaah) quotes the authentic ahaadeeth to establish these affairs and others]

[1]Reminder: Do not just follow, especially when you witness unexpected changes in someone you looked up to!

Ibn Mas’ood (radiyallaahu-anhu) said:

”Do not be [إمعة–yes men], saying: If the people are good (or righteous), we are good (or righteous); and if they do wrong (or become unrighteous), we do wrong (or become unrighteous); but make up your mind; If the people do good (or are righteous), then be good (or righteous). If they do evil, then do not do wrong.”
