The influence of the scholars and righteous worshipers–Imaam Ibnul Qayyim

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said:

Indeed the people only take their scholars and the righteous worshipers as examples to follow; so if the scholars are wicked and the worshipers are ignorant, then calamity will be widespread and trials will become great upon individuals and the general people.

Seek Allaah’s Protection from the trial of these two–Imaam Sufyaan Ath-Thawri

Sufyaan Ath-Thawree (rahimahullaah) said:

”Seek the protection of Allaah from the trial of the ignorant worshiper and the wicked scholar;

for indeed their trial is temptation for every one who has been put to trial.”

Whoever fears Allaah–Imaam Ibnul Qayyim

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said that some of the Salaf (rahimahullaah) said:

”Whoever fears Allaah, everything else will fear him.

And whoever does not fear Allaah, he will be made to fear everything.”

The saying of Allaah: –[وَٱعۡتَصِمُواْ بِٱللَّهِ هُوَ مَوۡلَٮٰكُمۡ‌ۖ فَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡمَوۡلَىٰ وَنِعۡمَ ٱلنَّصِيرُ]—with a short Faa-idah from Imaam Ibnul Qayyim

Allaah (The Most High) said:

[وَٱعۡتَصِمُواْ بِٱللَّهِ هُوَ مَوۡلَٮٰكُمۡ‌ۖ فَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡمَوۡلَىٰ وَنِعۡمَ ٱلنَّصِيرُ]

”And hold fast to Allah; He is your Maula (Patron, Lord, etc.), what an Excellent Maula (Patron, Lord, etc.) and what an Excellent Helper!” [1]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said:

When you hold fast to Allaah, Allaah will protect you.  Allaah will help you against (the evil urges) of your souls and shaytaan. These are two enemies that do not separate themselves from a slave (of Allaah). Their enmity is more harmful than an outside  enemy. Therefore being given help against them is the most important thing and a slave (of Allaah) is more in need of this (than other things).  And the completeness of this help (against the urge of the evil self and shaytaan is obtained) in accordance with one’s (level) of attachment to Allaah. What increases shaytaan’s loyalty to a person?

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Shaytaan gives loyalty to a person in accordance with his lack of Imaan, as Allaah  (The Most High) said:

 إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا الشَّيَاطِينَ أَوْلِيَاءَ لِلَّذِينَ لا يُؤْمِنُونَ

”We made the Shayatin (devils) Auliya’ (protectors and helpers) for those who believe not.” [7:27]

And Allaah (The Most High) said:

”And whosoever turns away (blinds himself) from the remembrance of the Most Beneficent (Allah) (i.e. this Qur’an and worship of Allah), We appoint for him Shaitan (Satan – devil) to be a Qarin (an intimate companion) to him.  And verily, they (Satans / devils) hinder them from the Path (of Allah), but they think that they are guided aright!  Till, when (such a one) comes to Us, he says [to his Qarin (Satan / devil companion)] “Would that between me and you were the distance of the two easts (or the east and west)” a worst (type of) companion (indeed)!” [43:36-38]

Allaah (The Mot High) stated in the story of Yusuf (alayhis-salaam)

كَذَلِكَ لِنَصْرِفَ عَنْهُ السُّوءَ وَالْفَحْشَاءَ إِنَّهُ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا الْمُخْلَصِينَ

Thus it was, that We might turn away from him evil and illegal sexual intercourse. Surely, he was one of Our chosen, guided slaves.[12:24]

And this is proven by (the narration) in Saheeh Muslim from Jaabir (radiyallaahu-anhu) that the Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said: ”Iblis places his throne upon water; he then sends detachments (for creating dissension); the nearer to him in rank are those who are most notorious in creating dissension. One of them comes and says: I did so and so. And he says: You have done nothing. Then one amongst them comes and says: I did not spare so and so until I sowed the seed of discord between a husband and a wife. The Satan goes near him and says: ‘You have done well. A’mash said: He then embraces him.” [Saheeh Muslim. Number:2813]

The Salaf were humble—Beware of snobbish behaviour due to the little you know!

Imaam Fudayl Ibn Iyaad (rahimahullaah) was asked about humility; so he said: ”(It is ) to humble oneself to the truth, submitting to it and accepting it from the one who said it. He accepts it even if he heard it from a child or from the most ignorant amongst the people.” [Madaarij As-Saalikeen 2/342]

Muhammad Ibn Waasi (rahimahullaah) said: ”If sins were a breeze, no one will sit with me.” [Siyar 6/120]

Khalaf Ibn Tameem (rahimahullaah) said: I saw Ath-Thawree at Makkah and many (people gathered or came to) him; so he said: ”To Allaah we belong! I fear that the Ummah will be lost when the people have a need of the likes of me.” [Siyar 7/275]

A man said to Maymoon Ibn Mehraan (rahimahullaah): ”The people will not cease to be upon good as long as Allaah keeps you (alive) for them;” so he said: ”keep yourself to your own affairs; the people will not cease to be upon good as long as they fear their Lord.” [Siyar 5/75]

A man said to Ibn Umar (radiyallaahu-anhu): ”O (you) the best of the people!” So he said: ”I am neither the best of the people nor the son of the best of the people; rather I am a slave from the slaves of Allaah. I have hope in Allaah and I fear Him.  By Allaah you (people) will not leave a man until you destroy him.” [Siyar 3/236]

Whenever Sufyaan Ath-Thawree (rahimahullaah) was informed that he was seen in a dream, he said: ”I know myself better than those who see dreams.” [7/252]

Reminder: ”Seize The Benefit Of Five Things From The People Of Your Time

Ibn Abee Haatim(.328H) Rahimahullaah said:

”I entered Damascus and came upon the students of hadeeth, and I passed by the circle of Qaasim al Joo’ee(d.248 AH). I found a  group sitting around him and he was speaking. Their appearance amazed me; and I heard him saying:

”Seize The Benefit Of Five Things From The People Of Your Time:

When you are present, you are not known;

When you are absent you are not missed;

When you are seen, your advice is not sought;

When you say something, your saying is not accepted;

And when you have some knowledge, you are not given anything for it.

I Also Advise You With Five Matters:

When you are treated unjustly, do not behave unjustly;

When you are praised, do not become happy;

When you are criticised, do not become upset;

When you are not believed, do not become angry;

And if people act deceitfully towards you, do not act deceitfully towards them.”

Ibn Abee Haatim said: ”So I took that as my benefit from Damascus.”
