Reading the Qur’aan and suddenly getting preoccupied with something else

Question:

The questioner asks: If a person holds the Mushaf to read but then he gets preoccupied with another affair; so he returns after a while to (continue) reading. Is there anything (wrong) with that?

Answer:

There is nothing (wrong) with that because this (deed) is a supererogation act of worship.  The performer of a supererogation act of worship is rewarded, but he (or she) is sinful if he (or she) abandons it. Hopefully, the one who has asked this question will be rewarded (in-shaa-Allaah) because he was determined to carry out an act of worship with this intention (i.e. to recite the Qur’aan). Abu Hurairah (radiyallaahu-anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allaah (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said:

Whoever thinks of doing a good deed then does not do it, Allah will write it down as one complete good deed. If he thinks of doing a good deed and then does it, Allah [may He be glorified and exalted] will write it down between ten and seven hundred fold, or many more. If he thinks of doing a bad deed then he does not do it, Allah will write it down as one complete good deed, and if he thinks of it then does it, Allah will write it down as one bad deed.[Saheeh Muslim 131]

[1] Righteous Actions: Recitation of the Qur’aan after finishing my work

Question:

The questioner says: I work as an accountant in one of the companies and I have a lot of free time during which I read the Qur’aan and listen to the Noble Qur’aan Broadcast. However, when my boss arrives I close the Mushaf. So what is the ruling on this action (of mine)? Benefit us with an answer and may Allaah reward you.

Answer:

If it is the case that you have carried out your work perfectly and fulfil everything your boss requires of you without delay, then it is permissible for you to read the Qur’aan and beneficial books, and listen to the Noble Qur’aan Broadcast in your free time. Rather benefitting from this (free) time in such activities is better than wasting it in that which does not benefit.

The Wicked Plotters Against The Messengers and Their Followers Were Unsuccesful

Allaah (The Most High) said:

وَكَذَٲلِكَ جَعَلۡنَا فِى كُلِّ قَرۡيَةٍ أَڪَـٰبِرَ مُجۡرِمِيهَا لِيَمۡڪُرُواْ فِيهَا‌ۖ وَمَا يَمۡڪُرُونَ إِلَّا بِأَنفُسِہِمۡ وَمَا يَشۡعُرُونَ

”And thus We have set up in every town the greatest of its criminals to plot therein. But they plot not except against their ownselves, and they perceive (it) not.” [Soorah Al-An’aam: Ayah 123]

[وَكَذَٲلِكَ جَعَلۡنَا فِى كُلِّ قَرۡيَةٍ أَڪَـٰبِرَ مُجۡرِمِيهَا] ”And thus We have set up in every town great ones of its wicked people;” That is those figureheads whose crimes were great and whose transgressions were severe.

[لِيَمۡڪُرُواْ فِيهَا‌ۖ] ”to plot therein” with deceit; calling to the path of shaytaan; waging war against the Messengers and their followers through speech and action.  However, their plots and machinations only backfired on them. That is because they plotted and Allah too was planning, and Allah is the Best of the planners.

Likewise Allaah set up great ones amongst the leaders of guidance and the most virtuous of them, who opposed those criminals; refuted their statements and strove against them in the path of Allaah.  They followed the paths leading to the path (of Allaah) and Allaah aided them. Allaah gave them an acute discernment and kept them steadfast.  So the days of victory and defeat alternated between them and their enemies, until the affair came to its final end—victory and triumph (for the believers) and the good final end is for the Muttaqoon (i.e. the pious and righteous persons who fear Allah much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden) and love Allah much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)].

This is the most disobedient person to the Messenger!

Allaah (The Most High) said:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تُقَدِّمُوا بَيْنَ يَدَيِ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ۖ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ

O you who believe! Do not put (yourselves) forward before Allah and His Messenger, and fear Allah. Verily! Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. [49:1]

O you who believe! Raise not your voices above the voice of the Prophet…[49:2]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said:

When it is the case that Allaah forbade (them) from giving precedence to (themselves) over the Messenger, then which type of giving precedence to oneself over the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) can be more severe than giving precedence to one’s intellect over the revelation he was sent with?

Many of the Salaf have stated (that this ayah means): ‘’Do not say anything (about the religion) until the messenger speaks and do not act until he commands you.’’

The most disobedient person amongst the people and the most severe with regards to giving precedence to him (or herself) over the Messenger is that one who gives precedence to his (or her) intellect or the intellect of another person over the revelation the Messenger was sent with. And when it is the case that Allaah has indeed forbidden them from raising their voices above the voice of the Messenger, then how about raising their intellects above the statements of the Messenger and the revelation he came with?

A means to safety and authority for the Ummah

Allaah (The Most High) stated:

Allah has promised those among you who believe, and do righteous good deeds, that He will certainly grant them succession to (the present rulers) in the earth, as He granted it to those before them, and that He will grant them the authority to practise their religion, that which He has chosen for them (i.e. Islam). And He will surely give them in exchange a safe security after their fear (provided) they (believers) worship Me and do not associate anything (in worship) with Me. But whoever disbelieved after this, they are the Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah).

[Qur’aan-24:55]

The promise of Allaah is always true and will definitely occur!

Allaah (The Most High) said:

سَنُرِيهِمْ آيَاتِنَا فِي الْآفَاقِ وَفِي أَنفُسِهِمْ حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَهُمْ أَنَّهُ الْحَقُّ ۗ أَوَلَمْ يَكْفِ بِرَبِّكَ أَنَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ شَهِيدٌ

We will show them Our Signs in the universe, and in their ownselves, until it becomes manifest to them that this (the Qur’an) is the truth. Is it not sufficient in regard to your Lord that He is a Witness over all things? [41:53]

[سَنُرِيهِمْ آيَاتِنَا فِي الْآفَاقِ –  We will show them Our Signs in the universe]: The (Islamic) conquest of the furthest regions of the earth. [وَفِي أَنفُسِهِمْ – and in their ownselves]: The conquest of Makkah.

This is the statement of Al-Hasan, Mujaahid and Sadiy (rahimahullaah)

May Allaah not make us a trial for those who have disbelieved!

“Our Lord! Make us not a trial for those who have disbelieved, and forgive us, Our Lord! Verily, You, only You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.” [60:5]

Mujaahid (rahimahullaah) said: The meaning of it is: Neither punish us at their hands nor through a punishment from yourself, so they say: ‘’Had these (Muslims) been upon the truth they would not have been afflicted with this (punishment).

Az-Zujaaj (rahimahullaah) said: The meaning of it is: Do not give them victory over us, so they think that they are upon truth and we are put to trial by way of that.

Avoid The Deviated Paths and Be Steadfast Upon Allaah’s Path

Allaah (The Most high) said:

وَعَلَى اللَّهِ قَصْدُ السَّبِيلِ وَمِنْهَا جَائِرٌ

And upon Allah is the responsibility to explain the Straight Path but there are ways that turn aside.’’ [16:9]

[وَعَلَى اللَّهِ قَصْدُ السَّبِيلِ- And upon Allah is the responsibility to explain the Straight Path]: Az-Zujaaj (rahimahullaah) said: It is Allaah who will clarify the straight path and call to it with Hujaj (i.e. clear and overwhelming proofs that defeats all the obstinate and stubborn ones) and Burhaan (i.e. proofs that clarify and distinguish between truth and falsehood in everything).

[وَمِنْهَا جَائِر -but there are ways that turn aside]: Ibn Abbaas (radiyallaahu-anhu) said, ‘’They are the different types of desires (i.e. evil desires). Ibnul Mubaarak (rahimahullaah) said, ‘’They are the (evil) desires and the innovations in religion.’’

The Sun and The Moon Are From Allaah’s Creation, So Do Not Worship Them!

Allaah (The Most High) said:

وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ وَالشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ ۚ لَا تَسْجُدُوا لِلشَّمْسِ وَلَا لِلْقَمَرِ وَاسْجُدُوا لِلَّهِ الَّذِي خَلَقَهُنَّ إِن كُنتُمْ إِيَّاهُ تَعْبُدُونَ

And from among His Signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Prostrate not to the sun nor to the moon, but prostrate to Allah Who created them, if you (really) worship Him. [41:37]

A Praiseworthy End For Those Who Do Not Desire Exaltedness And corruption In The Earth

Allaah (The Most High) said:

تِلْكَ الدَّارُ الْآخِرَةُ نَجْعَلُهَا لِلَّذِينَ لَا يُرِيدُونَ عُلُوًّا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فَسَادًا ۚ وَالْعَاقِبَةُ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ

That home of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not desire exaltedness in the earth or corruption. And the good end is for the Muttaqoon (pious ones) [28:83]

That home of the hereafter]: Meaning Paradise.

[ نَجْعَلُهَا لِلَّذِينَ لَا يُرِيدُونَ عُلُوًّا فِي الْأَرْضِ –We shall assign to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth]: Saeed Ibn Jubair said, ‘’It is (those who do not desire) transgression.’’ Ad-dahhaak said, ‘’It is (those who do not desire) oppression.’’ Yahyah Ibn Sallaam said, ‘’It is (those who do not desire) shirk’’ and Muqaatil said, ‘’It is (those who do not desire to show) haughtiness by rejecting Eemaan.’’

[وَلَا فَسَادًا – or corruption]: Ikrimah said, ‘’It is (those who do not desire) disobedience (to Allaah and His Messenger).’’ Ibn Saa’ib said, ‘’It is (those who do not) call to the worship of other besides Allaah.

And the good end is for the Muttaqoon (pious ones)]. They will have a praiseworthy end.
