[3] A Description of the One Who Abandoned Knowledge of the Book and Preferred the Dunya over the Aakhirah [Summarized Benefits from Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah)]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allaah [The Most High] said:

And recite (O Muhammad ) to them the story of him to whom We gave Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), but he threw them away, so Shaitan (Satan) followed him up, and he became of those who went astray.

And had We willed, We would surely have elevated him therewith but he clung to the earth and followed his own vain desire. So his description is the description of a dog: if you drive him away, he lolls his tongue out, or if you leave him alone, he (still) lolls his tongue out. Such is the description of the people who reject Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). So relate the stories, perhaps they may reflect.

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said: Contemplate on the affairs of wisdom and (significant) meanings found in this parable:

From them is the statement of Allaah: [ءَاتَيۡنَـٰهُ ءَايَـٰتِنَا- To whom We gave Our Aayaat(proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.)] Allaah informed (us) that He was the One Who gave this person knowledge of His Aayaat, for indeed it is blessing and Allaah is the One Who conferred it upon him. So Allaah attributed the source of this conferment to Himself. Then Allaah said: [فَٱنسَلَخَ مِنۡهَا- But he threw them away]; meaning: He left it in a manner similar to the manner in which a snake leaves its skin. And Allaah did not say, “We threw him away from it” because this person was the one who left it by way of following his desires.

And from those affairs of wisdom and (significant) meanings found in this parable is the statement of Allaah: [فَأَتۡبَعَهُ ٱلشَّيۡطَـٰنُ- So shaytaan(satan) followed him up]; meaning: shaytaan approached and pursued him, just as Allaah stated about Pharaoh’s people: [فَأَتۡبَعُوهُم مُّشۡرِقِينَ- So they pursued them at sunrise (26: 60)].

He (i.e. this person to whom Allaah gave knowledge of the Book) used to be protected and guarded against shaytaan through the Aayaat of Allaah; but when he threw away the Aayaat of Allaah, shaytaan overwhelmed him just as a lion overwhelms its prey;

[فَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡغَاوِينَ- And he became of those who went astray]-those who act in opposition to the knowledge they possess and those who know the truth but act in opposition to it, just like the evil scholars.

And from those affairs of wisdom and (significant) meanings found in this parable is the statement of Allaah: [وَلَوۡ شِئۡنَا لَرَفَعۡنَـٰهُ بِہَا- And had We willed, We would surely have elevated him therewith]; Therefore, Allaah informed (us) that being elevated in His presence is not merely acquired through knowledge, for indeed this person was from the scholars; rather elevation is acquired through adherence to the truth, giving precedence to it and aiming to please Allaah. Indeed, this person was among the most knowledgeable during his era, but he was neither elevated through his knowledge nor did he benefit from it. We seek Allaah’s protection from knowledge that does not benefit.

So Allaah informs (us) that He is the One Who will raise His slave-if He wills-with what He has bestowed upon him of knowledge, and if He does not raise the slave, then he is lowered; for indeed The Lord –[The One Who lowers and raises]-lowered him and did not raise him. This means: ‘’Had we willed, We would have preferred him, ennobled him, raised his status and rank by way of the Aayaat we gave him. Ibn Abbaas (radiyallaahu-anhumaa) said: Had Allaah willed, He would have raised this person through the knowledge he (i.e. this person) possessed. [وَلَـٰكِنَّهُ ۥۤ أَخۡلَدَ إِلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ-But he clung to the earth]. Muqaatil (rahimahullaah) said: ‘’He became pleased with the Dunya.’’

[وَٱتَّبَعَ هَوَٮٰهُ‌ۚ- And followed his own vain desire]. Al-Kalbee (rahimahullaah) said: He pursued the lowly affairs and abandoned the lofty affairs. Abu Rawqa (rahimahullaah) said: ‘’He chose the Dunyah over the Aakhirah.’’ Ataa (rahimahullaah said: ‘’He wanted the Dunya and obeyed his shaytaan.’’  Ibn Zayd (rahimahullaah said: ‘’He followed his desires by joining those who fought Musa (alayhis salaam) and his people.’’

A Miracle of Prophet Hud (alayhis-Salaam)—Imaam Sadi (rahimahullaah)

Imaam Sadi (rahimahullaah) said:

And had it been that there was nothing else from the miracles of the Messengers other than the religion they were sent with, then this would have (sufficed) as the greatest evidence that the religion is from Allaah because of its (perfect) rulings and regulations, which (perfectly) measures all beneficial affairs and the truthfulness of its information in every era; its command towards every good and prohibition of every evil.  Every Messenger (spoke) about the truthfulness of the (other) Messenger who came before him or was to come after him and bore witness for him.

And amongst the special miracles of Prophet Hud (alayhis-salaam) was that he was alone in carrying out his call; (alone) in discrediting their superstitions; declaring them misguided and rebuking their idols.  They were a people of violence, strength and tyranny, and indeed they did threaten him with their idols that he will be afflicted with madness or evil if he did not stop (calling them to Tawheed); so (Allaah informed us that Hud) challenged them in public and said to them openly:

”I call Allah to witness and bear you witness that I am free from that which you ascribe as partners in worship; With Him (Allah). So plot against me, all of you, and give me no respite. I put my trust in Allah, my Lord and your Lord! There is not a moving (living) creature but He has grasp of its forelock. Verily, my Lord is on the Straight Path (the truth).’’ [Hood; Ayaat: 54-56]

They were not able to harm him; So what miracle can be greater than this challenge to those enemies- those who were eager to destroy his call through every means! And when their transgression was to come to an end, he turned away from them and warned them of the arrival of a punishment.  So the punishment came upon them at the skyline and it was at a time in which they were greatly in need of rain.  So when they rejoiced, as (Allaah) said:

[فَلَمَّا رَأَوۡهُ عَارِضً۬ا مُّسۡتَقۡبِلَ أَوۡدِيَتِہِمۡ قَالُواْ هَـٰذَا عَارِضٌ۬ مُّمۡطِرُنَا‌ۚ] ‘‘Then, when they saw it as a dense cloud coming towards their valleys, they said: “This is a cloud bringing us rain!” but Allaah said: [بَلۡ هُوَ مَا ٱسۡتَعۡجَلۡتُم بِهِ] ”Nay, but it is that (torment) which you were asking to be hastened!” due to your saying to Hud: [فَأۡتِنَا بِمَا تَعِدُنَآ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ] ”Then bring us that with which you threaten us, if you are one of the truthful!” And Allaah said (about the punishment that finally came upon them): [رِيحٌ۬ فِيہَا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ۬] ”A wind wherein is a painful torment!”[تُدَمِّرُ كُلَّ شَىۡءِۭ بِأَمۡرِ رَبِّہَا] ”Destroying everything by the Command of its Lord.” [Ahqaaf: Ayaat: 22-25]

A Muslim should not behave like the people of Aad–Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz (rahimahullaah)

Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz (rahimahullaah) stated about the statement of Allaah:

وَإِذَا بَطَشْتُمْ بَطَشْتُمْ جَبَّارِينَ

”And when you seize, you seize as tyrants?” [26:130]

This is a rebuke from Allaah against Aad-the people of Hud (alayhis-salaam). Allaah rebuked them with this and that they are oppressors who strike people without right. They oppress people by way of striking, killing and seizing wealth by force. This is a rebuke against them and a blameworthy trait of theirs. Therefore, this is not permissible; rather it is obligated on a Muslim that he does not take wealth except based on what is right and he does not strike anyone except based on what is right. He neither has a right to transgress against the people nor to strike them; rather he seeks what is right through the path of the Islamic Law. If he has a right to seek after, he should seek it through the courts; through an upright path and through the authorities. He does not strike the people by way of oppression, transgression and injury. He should not oppress them by confiscating their wealth and striking; rather it is obligated on him to take his rights through the path of the Islamic Law and from an Islamic perspective. This (i.e. this statement of Allaah) is a rebuke against Aad and a blameworthy affair for which Allaah sent a devastating barren wind against them. They used to oppress the people and transgressed against them. [Source: Slightly Paraphrased. see link: http://www.binbaz.org.sa/mat/9111 ]

[5] Allaah’s Various Types of Punishments and Their Causes—Shaikh Abdullaah Ibn Salfeeq Adh-Dhufayree (may Allaah preserve him)

The Path to safety from disobedience

O slaves of Allaah! Safety (from disobedience is achieved by way of) repentance; so wake up from your heedlessness before what has befallen others befalls you. The enemies of Allaah do not overwhelm the obstinate ones among the Muslims except due to sins and disobedience. Chaos and restlessness does not occur except due to (the presence of actions that are in) opposition to the Qur’aan and the Sunnah, and except due to (the presence of) shirk, disobedience, bidah and (actions that are) in opposition to (the path of) Allaah and His Messenger. So O slaves of Allaah! Remember Allaah in times of ease; repent to Allaah in times of ease and thank Him in times of ease, and He will save you during hardship and distress. All the sons of Adam commit mistakes (or sins) and the best of those who sin (or commit mistakes) are those who repent. And remember the statement of Allaah (The Most High):

[نَبِّئۡ عِبَادِىٓ أَنِّىٓ أَنَا ٱلۡغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ] ”Declare (O Muhammad) unto My slaves, that truly, I am the Oft-Forgiving, the Most-Merciful.” [15:49]

And remember the statement of Allaah (The Most High):

فَلَمَّا جَآءَ أَمۡرُنَا جَعَلۡنَا عَـٰلِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمۡطَرۡنَا عَلَيۡهَا حِجَارَةً۬ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ۬ مَّنضُودٍ۬

مُّسَوَّمَةً عِندَ رَبِّكَ‌ۖ وَمَا هِىَ مِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ بِبَعِيدٍ۬

”So when Our Commandment came, We turned (the towns of Sodom in Palestine) upside down, and rained on them stones of baked clay, piled up; Marked from your Lord, and they are not ever far from the Zalimun(polytheists, evil-doers, etc.).” [11:82-83]

There is no relationship between Allaah and His creation except through (their) obedience to Allaah and fear of Him.

[4] Allaah’s Various Types of Punishments and Their Causes—Shaikh Abdullaah Ibn Salfeeq Adh-Dhufayree (may Allaah preserve him)

It is obligatory to ponder upon the punishments that were afflicted on the previous nations

Allaah (The Most High) promise to punish the Faasiqeen [rebellious, disobedient people] just as it happened to those before them–(punishments) by way of [خَسف—swallowed by the earth]; [ نَسف– wind blast]; [ريح—wind] and destruction, and punished for inattentiveness (to Allaah’s commandments and prohibitions) and heedlessness. [1] Allaah (The Most High):

”Do then those who devise evil plots feel secure that Allah will not sink them into the earth, or that the torment will not seize them from directions they perceive not? Or that He may catch them in the midst of their going to and fro (in their jobs), so that there be no escape for them (from Allah’s Punishment)? Or that He may catch them with gradual wasting (of their wealth and health). Truly! Your Lord is indeed full of Kindness, Most Merciful?” [16:45-47]

Allaah (The Most High) said:

”Did the people of the towns then feel secure against the coming of Our Punishment by night while they are asleep? Or, did the people of the towns then feel secure against the coming of Our Punishment in the forenoon while they play? Did they then feel secure against the Plan of Allah. None feels secure from the Plan of Allah except the people who are the losers. [7:97-99]

Allaah (The Most High) said:

مِّمَّا خَطِيٓـَٔـٰتِہِمۡ أُغۡرِقُواْ فَأُدۡخِلُواْ نَارً۬ا

‘’Because of their sins they were drowned.’’ [71:25]

And Allaah (The Most High) said:

فَلَمَّآ ءَاسَفُونَا ٱنتَقَمۡنَا مِنۡهُمۡ فَأَغۡرَقۡنَـٰهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِينَ

”So when they angered Us, We punished them, and drowned them all.’’ [43:55]

O Slaves of Allaah! Indeed Allaah is [الْجَبَّار –The Exalted and All Mighty Compeller]; [الْقَوِيُّ -The One Perfect In Strength]; [الْوَاحِدُ –The One and Only (Who has no partner in His Names, Attributes and Actions and Allaah alone deserves to be worshipped) etc] and Allaah is [الْقَهَّار -The Overwhelming Subduer Who is Never Overcome]. Allaah shows the slaves signs and punishments by way of which they can reflect and contemplate; so that they may return to obedience and not remain in their misguidance and heedlessness.

How much wisdom is there regarding the afflictions with which Allaah afflicts some of the slaves and not others!? And from that wisdom–and Allaah knows best–is so that they serve as a lesson for those who are present concerning (the affair of those who) have preceded; and so that they may take heed concerning what has already gone by and prepare themselves for what is to come.

Allaah’s admonitions and reprimands are of various types: sometimes it is by way of drowning, just as the people of Nooh were destroyed through drowning; sometimes it is by way of winds, just as Allaah destroyed the people of Ad by way of that; sometimes it is by way of (severe torment- destructive loud thunder bolts), just as Allaah destroyed Thamood by way of that (i.e. thunderbolts followed by an earthquake); sometimes is it by way of turning their houses upside down just as Allaah destroyed the people of Lut by way of that; sometimes is it by way of a violent wind with shower of stones just as Allaah destroy shu’aib’s people by way of that. [2] And sometimes it is by way of enemies who are given the upper hand, just as Allaah gave a people who had extreme strength in war fare the upper hand over Bani Israa’eel. [3]

Allaah (Glorified and Exalted Be He) commanded us to reflect upon, saying:

Say: “Behold all that is in the heavens and the earth,” but neither Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) nor warners benefit those who believe not. Then do they wait for (anything) save for (destruction) like the days of the men who passed away before them? Say: “Wait then, I am (too) with you among those who wait.” Then (in the end) We save Our Messengers and those who believe! Thus it is incumbent upon Us to save the believers. [10:101-103]

O slaves of Allaah! However with great sorrow, these calamities, miseries, admonitions and wars that we see here and there and hear about, are in reality a chastisement from Allaah upon His slaves, so that they may return (to Allaah in repentance and obedience) and seek rescue and delieverance from Allaah. Allaah (The Most High) said: [فَلَوۡلَآ إِذۡ جَآءَهُم بَأۡسُنَا تَضَرَّعُواْ ] ‘’When Our Torment reached them, why then did they not believe with humility?’’ Meaning: Did they humble themselves when our Torment reached them? [وَلَـٰكِن قَسَتۡ قُلُوبُہُمۡ وَزَيَّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلشَّيۡطَـٰنُ مَا ڪَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ ] ‘’But their hearts became hardened, and Shaitan (Satan) made fair-seeming to them that which they used to do.’’ [6:43]

Therefore O slaves of Allaah! Indeed it is a calamity that these afflictions have reached many people but they still remain upon what they are upon. They have neither turned away from their sins nor repent to Allaah (Glorified and Exalted Be He). The one who stays away from the congregational prayer has not ceased doing so; the who does not pay attention to his children and their upbringing has not ceased doing so and has not woken up; the one who eats usury and engages in forbidden dealings is still not paying attention and turning away (from his sin). This is the case with regards to all other acts of disobedience and major sins. The people remain upon their misguidance and increase in it-neither being reminded nor learning lessons.

Footnotes in booklet:

[1] Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said, ‘’From the punishments for sins are (the following): Indeed it causes blessings to cease and brings about punishment. A blessing does not cease from a slave and punishment does not befall a slave except due to sin; just as Ali Ibn Abee Taalib (radiyallaahu-anhu) said: A calamity does not descend except due to sin and a calamity is not removed except due to repentance. And indeed Allaah (Glorified and Exalted Be He said:

[وَمَآ أَصَـٰبَڪُم مِّن مُّصِيبَةٍ۬ فَبِمَا كَسَبَتۡ أَيۡدِيكُمۡ وَيَعۡفُواْ عَن كَثِيرٍ۬] And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much.’’ [42:30]

And Allaah (The Most High) said: [ذَٲلِكَ بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَمۡ يَكُ مُغَيِّرً۬ا نِّعۡمَةً أَنۡعَمَهَا عَلَىٰ قَوۡمٍ حَتَّىٰ يُغَيِّرُواْ مَا بِأَنفُسِہِمۡ‌ۙ] ‘’ That is so because Allah will never change a grace which He has bestowed on a people until they change what is in their ownselves.‘’ [8:53]

So Allaah (The Most High) informed (us) that He does not replace the blessing He bestows on any individual unless the person changes his/her own state of affairs-by replacing obedience to Allaah with disobedience; replacing gratefulness to Allaah with ungratefulness; replacing the means to Allaah’s Pleasure with the means leading to Allaah’s Displeasure. When a person changes, Allaah changes his state of affairs as an exact recompense (according to his evil crimes). [وَمَا رَبُّكَ بِظَلَّـٰمٍ۬ لِّلۡعَبِيدِ] ‘’And your Lord is not at all unjust to (His) slaves.’’ [41:46] If he (the person) replaces obedience with disobedience, Allaah replaces his state of wellbeing with punishment and his state of honour with humiliation.

[2]Allaah (Glorified and Exalted Be He) said:

‘’So We punished each (of them) for his sins, of them were some on whom We sent Hasiban (a violent wind with shower of stones) [as the people of Lout (Lot)], and of them were some who were overtaken by As-Saihah [torment – awful cry, etc. (as Thamud or Shu’aib’s people)], and of them were some whom We caused the earth to swallow [as Qarun (Korah)], and of them were some whom We drowned [as the people of Nuh (Noah), or Fir’aun (Pharaoh) and his people]. It was not Allah Who wronged them, but they wronged themselves.’’ [29:40]

[3]Allaah (Glorified and Exalted Be He) said: [فَإِذَا جَآءَ وَعۡدُ أُولَٮٰهُمَا بَعَثۡنَا عَلَيۡڪُمۡ عِبَادً۬ا لَّنَآ أُوْلِى بَأۡسٍ۬ شَدِيدٍ۬ فَجَاسُواْ خِلَـٰلَ ٱلدِّيَارِ‌ۚ وَكَانَ وَعۡدً۬ا مَّفۡعُولاً۬  ]

‘’So, when the promise came for the first of the two, We sent against you slaves of Ours given to terrible warfare. They entered the very innermost parts of your homes. And it was a promise (completely) fulfilled.’’ [17:5]

Pharaoh and his bunch of [sinful rebellious] idiots

Allaah  (The Most High) said: [وَقَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ] ”Fir’aun (Pharaoh) said’’ with haughtiness and tyranny, whilst deluding his foolish people; [ذَرُونِي أَقْتُلْ مُوسَىٰ وَلْيَدْعُ رَبَّهُ ] ‘’Leave me to kill Musa (Moses), and let him call his Lord (to stop me from killing him)!’’ [Soorah Ghafir: Ayah 26]

It was his claim that had it not been for his consideration of the wishes of his people, he would have killed Musa, and (Musa’s) supplication to his Lord would not have prevented him from that. He then mentioned what made him want to kill Musa and that he is a sincere adviser to his people, and that he wished to remove mischief from the land.  Allaah (The Most High) said that he said:

[إِنِّي أَخَافُ أَنْ يُبَدِّلَ دِينَكُمْ أَوْ أَنْ يُظْهِرَ فِي الْأَرْضِ الْفَسَادَ] ‘’I fear that he (Musa) may change your religion, or that he may cause mischief to appear in the land!” [Soorah Ghaafir: Ayah 26]

This is the most amazing the affair can be! The evilest one among the creation gives advice to the people against the best among the creation. This is disguised falsehood and propaganda, which cannot seize except the intellects of those (people) about whom Allaah stated: [فَاسْتَخَفَّ قَوْمَهُ فَأَطَاعُوهُ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَوْمًا فَاسِقِينَ] ”Thus he [Fir’aun (Pharaoh)] befooled and misled his people, and they obeyed him. Verily, they were ever a people who were Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah).’’[Soorah Az-Zukhruf: Ayah 54]

”And recite (O Muhammad) to them the story of him to whom We gave Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), but he threw them away, so Shaitan (Satan) followed him up, and he became of those who went astray.” [7:175]

”And had We willed, We would surely have elevated him therewith but he clung to the earth and followed his own vain desire. So his description is the description of a dog: if you drive him away, he lolls his tongue out, or if you leave him alone, he (still) lolls his tongue out. Such is the description of the people who reject Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). So relate the stories, perhaps they may reflect.’’ [7:176]

Allaah likens him—[the one whom He gave knowledge of the Book and taught him knowledge which was not given to others, but he abandoned it; followed his desires and preferred the Anger of Allaah over the Pleasure of Allaah; preferred the worldly life over the afterlife and preferred the created beings over the Creator]—to a dog, which is considered to be from the meanest of animals; the lowest in status and the meanest in inclination.

Its desire does not exceed beyond its stomach (i.e. its desire for food). It is considered to among the greediest (of animals) and most eager (for food). And due to its eagerness (for food), it does not go about except that it places its nose on the ground, whilst sniffing and roaming about greedily and eagerly. It does not cease smelling its anus besides all its other body parts. If a stone is thrown at it, it returns to bite it due to extreme greed. When it takes possession of a dead animal enough for a hundred dogs, it would not allow another dog to eat anything from it, except whilst growling and seeking to gain the upper hand due to eagerness, greed and covetousness.

In this parable about the one likened to a dog that constantly lolls its tongue out—[the one who gave precedence to this worldly life and its quick fading enjoyment over the afterlife despite his abundant knowledge of the Book]—there is a marvellous underlying reason. And that is because this person whom Allaah mentioned as one who abandoned the verses of Allaah and followed his desires, he (only) did so out of severe eagerness for the worldly life and due his heart being separated from Allaah and the afterlife. He is extremely eager for it and his eagerness is similar to the constant eagerness of a dog whether it is troubled or left alone.

Musa said to him: Verily, you are a plain misleader!”

Allaah (The Most High) said:

And he (Musa) entered the city at a time of unawareness of its people, and he found there two men fighting, – one of his party (his religion – from the Children of Israel), and the other of his foes. The man of his (own) party asked him for help against his foe, so Musa (Moses) struck him with his fist and killed him. He said: “This is of Shaitan‘s (Satan) doing, verily, he is a plain misleading enemy.”

He said: “My Lord! Verily, I have wronged myself, so forgive me.” Then He forgave him. Verily, He is the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

He said: “My Lord! For that with which You have favoured me, I will never more be a helper for the Mujrimun (criminals, disobedient to Allah, polytheists, sinners, etc.)!”

So he became afraid, looking about in the city (waiting as to what will be the result of his crime of killing), when behold, the man who had sought his help the day before, called for his help (again). Musa (Moses) said to him: “Verily, you are a plain misleader!” [1]

Imaam Ibnul Jawzi (rahimahullaah) said that one of the meanings of this statement [إِنَّكَ لَغَوِىٌّ۬ مُّبِينٌ] ”Verily, you are a plain misleader” is: You are misled in fighting a person whom you are unable to repel his evil from yourself. [2]

[2] Zaadul Maseer Fee Ilmil Tafseer

These are the Verses of the Clear Book. Verily, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’an in order that you may understand

 Allaah (The Most High) said:

الٓر‌ۚ تِلۡكَ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ ٱلۡمُبِينِ

إِنَّآ أَنزَلۡنَـٰهُ قُرۡءَٲنًا عَرَبِيًّ۬ا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ

Alif-Lam-Ra.These are the Verses of the Clear Book. Verily, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’an in order that you may understand. [12:1-2]

Allaah (The Most high) informed (us) that the verses of the Qur’aan are clear; meaning: Its wordings and meanings are manifest and clear. And from its manifest and clear (nature) is that it has been sent down in the Arabic Language—the noblest and most (precise and eloquent of all languages in giving clarification, explanation etc). And all this clarity and explanation is so that لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُون — ‘’You may understand’’; meaning: so that you may understand its prescribed boundaries (in punishments, retribution, acts of worship, dealings etc); its fundamental principles; its subsidiary issues; its commandments and prohibitions. So when you understand it (after studying, contemplating etc) and your hearts become characterized with its understanding, then that will produce the fruits of actions of the limbs and submission to it. And لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُون – ‘’In order that you may understand’’; meaning: Your intellects are enhanced by way of affirming the noble and lofty meaning (of affairs) in your minds; so you move from one state to another loftier and more perfect state. (This is) a Book, the Verses whereof are perfected (in every sphere of knowledge, etc.)

Allaah (The Most High) said:

الٓر‌ۚ كِتَـٰبٌ أُحۡكِمَتۡ ءَايَـٰتُهُ ۥ ثُمَّ فُصِّلَتۡ مِن لَّدُنۡ حَكِيمٍ خَبِيرٍ

Alif-Lam-Ra. (This is) a Book, the Verses whereof are perfected (in every sphere of knowledge, etc.), and then explained in detail from One (Allah), Who is All-Wise and Well-Acquainted (with all things). [1]

Allaah (The Most High) said: This is a great Book and a noble revelation. [أُحۡكِمَتۡ ءَايَـٰتُهُ– the Verses whereof are perfected]; meaning: (Absolutely) perfect and excellent. Its information is (absolutely) truthful and its commandments and prohibitions are (absolutely) just. Its wordings are (absolutely) eloquent and its meanings are (absolutely) magnificent. [ثُمَّ فُصِّلَتۡ– And then explained in detail]; meaning: Distinguished (i.e. for its absolute excellence, truthfulness, perfection, infallibility etc) and explained with the loftiest of explanations. [مِن لَّدُنۡ حَكِيمٍ خَبِير— From One (Allah), Who is All-Wise and Well-Acquainted (with all things)]. He (Allaah) imposes all things (or all affairs) in their rightful places and positions them in their rightful positions. He neither commands nor prohibits except in accordance with His (absolute perfect) Wisdom. [خَبِير]- ‘Well-Acquainted’ with all apparent and hidden things.

And when it is the case that it’s (i.e. the verses of the Qur’aan) perfection and detailed explanation is from Allaah, The All-Wise and Well Acquainted (with all hidden and apparent things), then no question should be asked about its greatness and loftiness, and about it being gathered upon perfect wisdom and vast mercy.
