A sensible person keeps away from arrogance due to the blameworthy traits it carries. One of them is that he (i.e. the person) does not become haughty towards anyone, except after being amazed with himself and sees that to be superiority.
Humility is from the manners of the noble ones and pride is from the characteristics of the vile ones. Humility brings about the people’s love (for a person) and contentment brings about peace of mind.
Ahmad Ibn Aasim Al-Antaakee (rahimahullaah) lived in the generation of Bishr Ibn Al-Haarith (rahimahullaah); Ali Ibn Abdir-Rahmaan (rahimahullaah) said that Ahmad Ibn Aasim Al-Antaakee (rahimahullaah) said: The most beneficial intellect is (the one) that makes you acknowledge the blessings of Allaah and assists you in being thankful (i.e. by using those blessings to obey Allaah) and to be in opposition to (forbidden) desires.
He (rahimahullaah) was asked about sincerity, so he said: (It is) the performance of righteous deeds, whilst not wishing to be mentioned and exalted due to your deed, and not seeking a reward through your deed from anyone (besides Allaah). This is sincerity.
He (rahimahullaah) also said: If you are seeking rectification for your heart, then seek aid through that by restraining your tongue (i.e. restrain your tongue from evil speech, falsehood, the affairs that do not concern you etc).

Some of the wise people said: Whoever is given knowledge (of the religion) and knowledge of the Qur’aan, then it is obligated (on him to be) aware of himself. He does not lower himself to the people of the Dunya (i.e. those with worldly riches) due to what they possess; for indeed he has been given better than what has been given to the people of the dunyah. That is because Allaah (The Most High) referred to the worldly life as ‘A Short Enjoyment, saying: [قُلۡ مَتَـٰعُ ٱلدُّنۡيَا قَلِيلٌ۬ – Say: Short is the enjoyment of this world] and He referred to knowledge and the Qur’aan as [خَيۡرً۬ا ڪَثِيرً۬اۗ- Abundant good].

Imaam Maalik (rahimahullaah) said that it reached him from Al-Qaasim Bin Muhammad (rahimahullaah) who said: “I met a people (i.e. Salaf) who were not amazed by speech, rather they were amazed by actions.

Indeed, they ask those below you (in knowledge). He (Abdur-Rahmaan) said: So Alqamah said, ”Indeed, I hate that (they) march behind me, saying: This is Alqamah; This is Alqamah!”

Al-A’mash (rahimahullaah) said: I approached Khaythama (rahimahullaah) and said, Indeed I saw something from Ibraaheem (An-Nakha’ee) the likes of which I have not seen (before); he (Khaythama) said, What is it? I said, I saw him sitting with strangers and informed him about it, so he said, I was sitting close to them and disliked that by leaving them people would see that as a sign of some superiority I have over them, so I sat with them.
